8 important instant pot tips

Crunchy, Crispy Food

Your instant pot is not a fryer and is not designed for the higher temperatures required to heat cooking oil for something like crispy roast chicken. Of course, an instant pot is perfect for a dish like carnitas, but to finally make the meat crispy after taking the meat out of the instant pot, put it in a pan and brown it for a few minutes or on a baking sheet and crunchy in a hot oven.

Dairy Products

Just as in a slow cooker milk products such as cheese, milk and sour cream coagulate in an instant pot, whether you use the quick cooking step or the slow cooking step. Add these ingredients after the dish has cooked, or avoid making the recipe in the Instapot.

There are two exceptions. One is when you make yoghurt, and only if you use a special recipe for an instant pot. The other is when you prepare a cheese cake and only if you follow an instant pot recipe.

While technically you can cook pasta in an instant pot, this is the case may come out rubbery or unevenly cooked. To be honest, if you do not have the option, cooking the noodles in a pot on a hob is just as quick and easy, and results in better cooked noodles throughout.

Two Recipes Simultaneously

Boil your roast with potatoes and carrots are a tried and true recipe, right? Not in this case. Do not try to make a main course with a side dish in your instant pot. They fit together in the pot, but each meal needs its own cooking time. Cook together inevitably leads to a dry or muddy mess.

You do not actually bake a cake in an instant pot, but steam it down. The cake will be damp – which works for something like bread pudding – but you will not get a nice crust on the cake or the tough edges around which everyone is battling with baked brownies. However, if you need to throw something together for a potluck or a quick family dessert, you will get a damp sponge without preparation time in about half an hour.

Canning, the art of cooking and sealing food in glasses, is often done in a pressure cooker. So it seems like a good idea to prepare a lot of jams, cucumbers or jellies in your Instapot. Do not do it.

With an instant pot you can not monitor the temperature of your canned food as you would with a normal pressure cooker. In canning, proper cooking and sealing of food is crucial. Improper cooking and sealing can lead to bacterial growth, which can lead to food poisoning.

Some of the newer models, such as the Duo Plus, have a Sterilize setting that lets you clean baby bottles and kitchen utensils such as glasses and utensils.

Rare or medium-rare meat

A pressure cooker is not a grill. An instant pot is great for harder pieces of meat – which the pressure cooker can easily break – but is not as good for those that are best eaten medium-rare, such as a steak. Keep this for the grill.

Yellow and Red Lentils [19659012] We love lentils, but not all can be cooked in an Instapot. Brown and green lentils resist pressure cooking, but the more delicate yellow and red versions turn to mush as they cook so quickly. For best results, cook on the stove.

Do not try this trendy method on most instant pot models. An exception is the Instant Pot Max, which allows you to control the cooking temperature exactly. If you do not have an instant pot at this level of control, it's better to use an instant pot topper for sous vide cooking, if you're really set to use your pressure cooker this way.

In general, seafood such as fish, oysters, shrimp, clams and clams are just too sensitive for quick-cooking and slow cooking. These are foods that are cooked quickly at just the right temperature, which is very difficult with an instant pot. A few seconds too long or at the wrong temperature and it can lead to porridge or rubber clumps.

In addition, fish, shellfish and crustaceans can be prepared easily with other methods, so that breaking out of the instant pot is no guarantee for them Better results as with harder meat.

The only exception is squid and cuttlefish. The pressure cooking of these hard creatures can make them tender while the meat stays juicy. Be sure to find a recipe that is specific to the instant pot.
