12 new things to try with your Alexa speakers

In September, Amazon announced 12 new Alexa-powered gadgets showing everything from a new Echo Dot and show to a microwave and connected wall clock .

Along with the new hardware, Amazon also announced new software enhancements. It has taken some steps to make Alexa even more conversational and less transactional while adding a handful of features that enhance the overall language assistant experience.

Here are 1

2 new ways you can expect in the coming months with your Alexa speakers] Alexa Guard

At best, a smart home is a great way to prevent potential intrusions. You can lock the entrances, receive alerts when someone is in your house, schedule lamps to be displayed all day long, make someone feel at home, and more.

Alexa Guard is a new feature that uses machine learning for everything from these things with little to no effort from you. To activate Alexa Guard, just say "Alexa, I'm leaving." Their echo devices are then alerted to unusual sounds such as glass breakage or smoke alarm. It also turns the lights on and off, which looks like a natural pattern, rather than a rigid schedule to simulate someone at home.

If any noise is detected, Alexa will send you Smart Alerts with an audio clip of the sound for your review. You can then choose to forward this alert to Ring or ADT.

Alexa Guard will be available on selected echo devices later this year

New Routines

Routines are a great way to get Alexa up and running for you by grouping several actions into a single command or her every day at the same time. Amazon announced that it would extend routines to have more triggers, such as when the temperature in a particular room is too high or too low, when you go home, or when motion is detected.

Also new to routines are delayed actions. Instead of starting the actions as soon as the routine is triggered, they can start, if desired, a few minutes later. And if you want a routine to play music, you can put a sleep timer for that sound into the routine.

Amazon has also announced routines for kids that are routine templates that say a nice (customizable) message, turn on the lights and start to sleep when you say "Alexa, good night".

Multistep Requests

In addition to the follow-up mode, in which Alexa listens for a second after her first request, Amazon Alexa updates for multi-level requests

which means that you request multiple actions in one command can. For example, say something like "Alexa, add eggs, milk, and bread to my grocery list," or "Alexa, play jazz music on Spotify in Volume Three."

Location-Based Reminders

Earlier this year, Google updated the Assistant and Google Home speakers to collaborate with Location-Based Memories . Now Amazon is firing with a similar function. You can say, "Alexa, remember to water the plants when I get home." When you arrive home, a notification will be sent to your phone.

It is not yet clear how extensive these location-based memories will be. For example, Google Home location-based reminders work with generic locations (like the grocery store), store names, and specific addresses.

Probably due to Alexa and Cortana's recent partnership Amazon has also announced a new call option during the event: Skype. You can make voice and video calls to your Skype contacts by simply saying, "Alexa, call [Skype] via Skype [person’s name]."

Cook with Alexa

Alexa was already a great help in the kitchen with features like multiple-timer grocery lists, tons of cooking and much more.

Alexa will soon be working more closely with these third-party capabilities (Kitchen Stories, Allrecipes, Epicurious, Food52, TheKitchn, and SideChef) to give you step-by-step directions. To start, just say "Alexa, let's start cooking."

Email

Alexa will soon also receive email integration. After linking either a Gmail, Outlook, or Hotmail account, you can say, "Alexa, do I have new emails?" It will read your emails and you can only answer with your voice.

Whisper Mode

One of the worst things about a smart speaker is the volume control, especially late at night other people might sleep around the house. Google Home has a feature called Night Mode that automatically increases or decreases the volume of a schedule. But the upcoming Whisper mode for Alexa spokesman is a completely different interpretation of the problem.

When you whisper your command to Alexa, her answer will also whisper.

Know when a new album hits Amazon Music [19659005] If you use Amazon Music in your Alexa speakers and follow your favorite artists, Alexa will let you know about new album and track releases by these artists. As a small icing on the cake some release notifications will be voiced by the artists themselves.

Hunches

You know what it's like to have a clue, now Alexa tries to imitate this with machine learning. If you continue to use your smart home devices, Alexa will learn how you use them and make suggestions if these devices are not set up the way you normally use them. This may sound confusing, but it is really very simple.

Say you usually turn off the kitchen light before you go to bed, but you let it go. If you say, "Alexa, good night," it might ask you if you want it to turn it off and do it for you (assuming you have Smart Bulbs or Switches .)

Still Do not realize how incoming hunches (or what types of smart home technologies) work, but we'll know more when it hits the market later this year.

Local Voice Control

Usually, when your Internet goes out your Alexa speakers stop working. But the upcoming Echo devices with built-in smart home hubs (the new Echo Plus and Echo Show ) will continue to be able to control your smart home devices local wireless network

This feature does not work with existing echo devices or new devices without built-in hub functions.

Video Doorbell

The Echo Show will soon be working with Ring and August video doorbells. If someone rings the doorbell, you can say, "Alexa, answer the front door." A two-way video and audio feed will come to your speaker.

Until these new features and echo speakers arrive, try these seven uncommon Alexa abilities .

If you have not already, consider pre-ordering the new Alexa devices so that next month they'll be among the first to try them out.
