The latest generation of Apple TV has much to offer that its predecessors do not. It's a casual game device, with useful apps like weather or news services, and even baked Siri to help you find what you're looking for faster. And unlike in the past, there are two storage options to choose from.
With Apple TV, the basics are easy to determine. However, there are countless features, tricks and Siri commands that are not immediately obvious to first-time users or users who are not too immersed in the settings. Here are 20 tips and tricks to help you master Apple TV.
Rename your Apple TV
If you have more than one Apple TV in your home, you can easily rename it to better distinguish it. Go to Settings> General> About> Name and select one of the preset names, eg. B. Living Room Bedroom or Office . If you do not like any of them, you can select Custom Name below and set your own name.
This will help you determine which Apple TV you're streaming or mirroring to. Force Remote Control Restart
If your Apple TV is unreliable or an application is not working properly, you can navigate the Settings menu to reboot. You can also simply hold down the Home + Menu buttons until the status light on the front of the Apple TV flashes quickly. If you release the keys, a reboot is forced.
Hibernate Apple TV
Apple TV automatically hibernates after a certain amount of time. This can be adjusted under under Settings> General> Sleep after . However, if you want to manually hibernate Apple TV, long press the Home key and select Sleep . Pressing any button on the remote restarts Apple TV.
Quickly move apps to folders
If many apps are installed on your Apple TV, you can organize them into folders. As in iOS long press on the icon and drag it over another app icon to create a folder. If you add an app to an existing folder, you can drag and drop it into the folder, which sometimes becomes unwieldy with the Apple TV remote.
An easier way is to long press the icon and press the Play / Pause button and select . Go to [folder name] to quickly drop it to any folder.
Customize the Screen Saver
The new Apple TV screensavers look amazing. They bring beautiful cityscapes and other landscapes in the form of high resolution video into your living room. If this is not your speed, you can change the screen saver and the frequency of the update.
Go to Settings> General> Screensaver and select Apple Photos My Photos Shared Residence or My Music . Each selection contains different settings, eg. For example, the transition between photos or how often new aerial screensavers are downloaded.

You can click on one side of the touchpad on the new Siri remote to jump forward or backward for 10 seconds at a time. If you click Pause, you can scrub even faster by sliding left or right on the trackpad.
To jump forward or backward a certain amount of time, you can just ask Siri. Say "jump back 5 minutes" or "leap 10 minutes".

To delete your Apple TV Home screen by deleting apps that you no longer use, long-press an icon, press the Play / Pause button, and select Delete . and confirm your selection.

Additional menu key functions
The menu key not only allows you to move to the previous page. If you double-click on the screen saver will start. Clicking on the menu button three times activates the shortcuts for the accessibility features such as subtitles, subtitles or zoom. If you have more than one option enabled, pressing it three times will ask you which link to turn on.
To the App Switcher
I spent weeks with my Apple TV before I realized that there is an App Switcher la iOS. To get there, press the home key twice. As you swipe left or right, you scroll through a chronological list of your latest apps. If you swipe up after pausing in an application preview, that app will close.
Install apps automatically
Just as you install an app on your iPhone and automatically install it on your iPad, you can automatically download apps to your Apple TV as long as the app includes an Apple TV component. To enable the feature, go to Settings> Apps and click . Automatic installation of apps to enable the option. `
Press the play key to activate the function on-screen keyboard is not the best, but if you decide to use it, you know that the Play / Pause key is the shift key. or Caps Lock feature, and saves you from switching from uppercase to lowercase screens manually.
Although this is not an official abbreviation, you must erase everything you typed in a search bar or in a text box, rather than pressing all the way to the right and long pressing the clear key on the screen the Siri key . Queuing Siri deletes any text entered to make room for dictation input, but if you press the key fast enough, it will not have time to hear an input and act as a quick delete key.
Add a keyboard or gamepad
To avoid even more trouble finding or entering text on Apple TV, grab a pair of Bluetooth keyboard and pair it. Put your keyboard in pairing mode and go to Settings> Remote controls and devices> Bluetooth . Select your keyboard in section Other Devices and follow the instructions on the screen.
You can also connect gamepads to your Apple TV to use as a lightweight gaming console. The gamepad must be Bluetooth enabled and MFi certified.
Pair Bluetooth Headphones
You can also pair Bluetooth headphones for late night television while your roommates sleep using the same Bluetooth menu. I also found this helpful when a TV show or movie is unusual or deficient. You can use the option Reduce Loud Tones but listening through headphones seems to work better.
Use your iPhone as a remote control.
Apple has recently updated the Apple TV Remote App for iPhone. Simply download the app, connect your phone to the same network as the TV, add as many Apple TVs as you can to your home, and control them with the iPhone. If you have the Apple TV Remote app installed on your iPhone, it should also be installed on your Apple Watch .
When you open the Remote app on your Apple Watch, you can add your Apple TVs and control them from the wrist. Swiping in any direction on the clock works like the touchpad on the remote, as does tapping. There is a menu button and play / pause, but no home button.
Transfer any audio to your entertainment system
While you have no official support for apps like Spotify or Google Play Music on Apple TV, you can still stream your favorite app through your entertainment system using AirPlay and an Apple TV.
Open your favorite music streaming or podcast catcher, start playing audio, and search for the AirPlay or Cast icon in the app. If you can not see it, try pulling up from the bottom of the iPhone screen and enabling AirPlay via Control Center. Choose your Apple TV and stream your music over your TV or surround sound.
Control Your Smart Home
If you have HomeKit-compatible Smart Home devices, you can use your Apple TV or iPad as a hub for remote control. You can use Siri on another iOS device.
However, a recent TVOS update added the ability to directly control your HomeKit devices with the Siri Remote for Apple TV. If you're signed in to the same iCloud account on Apple TV and your iPhone, the Apple TV will be set up as the HomeKit hub. To make sure it's set up correctly, go to Settings> Accounts> iCloud . A menu item named HOMEKIT will be there, and the name of your home should be Connected as .
. With the Siri remote you can control your smart home devices with your device voice. When you're away from home, you can use Siri on a connected iPhone or iPad, and Apple TV remotely controls the smart home devices.
Ask Siri what you should see
If you're not sure what to see when you first sit down, just press the Siri button and say, "What should I see?" Siri gives you a choice of what's new and popular. You can also say, "Show me popular movies" or "Which shows are currently trendy?"
Apple TV now offers single sign-on in the Settings app. When you sign in to your TV provider's Apple TV settings, you'll automatically be signed in to all streaming apps that support the feature, such as A & E, ESPN, or FXNOW. This means you no longer have to go through the tedious login process to each streaming app individually.
At the time of this writing, the supported television service providers are:

The video is rewound to a point where the last person started talking, and closed captioning is temporarily turned on, so you can not only hear it again, but also read what you said.

In the window that appears, click the down-arrow button next to the record button and select your Apple TV from the drop-down menu. The live preview of your Apple TV screen appears on your Mac. Use your iPhone or iPad to enter text.
You may have noticed after a recent update that scrolling into a text input box on the Apple TV triggered a notification on nearby iOS devices. This is called the Apple Remote Keyboard and works with iOS devices and Apple TVs registered under the same Apple IDs if Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are enabled.
To use the feature, open the notification on one of the iOS devices and start tapping the on-screen keyboard. The letters you enter appear on the Apple TV.
