If you're like me and most Mac users, you own and run a 12- or 13-inch MacBook. Such a laptop offers an ideal compromise between portability and productivity, but at certain points of the day, my 13-inch MacBook Pro ($ 1,399 at B & H Photo-Video) may feel a bit cramped in my attempt juggle too many open windows. The new that introduced MacOS Mojave are helpful to arrange the files on my desktop. Nevertheless, I struggle with the multitasking flood against too many open windows. Here's a trio of Mac apps that can help keep your windows organized and keep your head above water.
The Magnet App is available for 99 cents in the Mac App Store. Lets you drag a window to the side or corner of the screen so it occupies one-half, one-third, or one-quarter of your screen. Drag a window to select half, bottom edge for a third, and a corner for a quarter. Drag it to the top edge to expand the window and take up the entire screen (without activating full-screen mode, where you lose the menu bar). The magnet also has an icon in the menu bar that lets you change the size and position of windows instead of dragging them to the edge of the screen. In the app Preferences, you can set up keyboard shortcuts to move your windows.
Hocus Focus is not included in the Mac App Store, but can be downloaded for free from the Developers website. It hides windows that you leave on your desktop so you can focus on the single window you're using. The default length is 30 seconds before an inactive window is rolled up under the carpet (well, to the dock), but you can adjust the timing from the Hocus Focus menu bar. It not only cleans your cluttered desktop, but also the area of the last apps in the dock. Apps hidden by Hocus Focus will not appear in the system tray, making it easier to navigate between the active windows. Clear Desktop Clean App Tray Can not lose.
Station is also a free download directly from the developer and serves as the central hub for your web apps. It supports Gmail, Google Drive, Slack, Twitter and many others. You select the apps you want to add, log in to your accounts, and Station combines them all into a single window. Each of your apps in Station is just a click away – icons for each application are located along the navigation bar on the left edge of the app. It's much easier to switch between apps and documents in Station than to use tabs in a browser. With all your apps in a single window, you can search all your apps in Station. Station also groups the notifications of all your apps in one place to aid you in your daily work. You can turn off notifications when you want to lay your head down and focus on the task at hand.
