3 unexpected ways to use your slow cooker

Your slow cooker is more than just a handy device that cooks food while you're away. It can also be used as a double boiler, steamer and bread maker.

Double cookie use

You can turn your slow cooker into a double boiler to melt chocolate, cheese and more by using items you may already have in the kitchen. First, find a metal or ceramic mat that fits into the bottom of the Slow Cooker pot. Then you will find a ceramic bowl or a metal pot that fits into the slow cooker on the saucer.

To begin the warming process, fill the pot with water to a quarter. Put the coaster in the pot and then place the smaller bowl or pot on the saucer. Place the food you want to melt in the inner bowl or pot.

Set the slow cooker up until the food has melted and then low to keep it that way. This is a great way to set up a fondue station at a party without buying or renting a fondue pot.

Steam during multitasking

1; but you want to cook slowly while doing something else – there are two ways to use the slow cooker as a steamer.

The easiest way is to place a steam basket in the slow cooker and stack the vegetables on top. Just add enough water to the bottom of the pot to keep the vegetables above the water level. Place the lid on the stove and turn it for 2 to 4 hours or until the vegetables are soft.

If you do not have a steaming basket, put half a cup of water in the slower stove. Then wrap your vegetables in foil. Place it with the lid on the stove to hold the steam. As with a steaming basket, the vegetables take about 2 to 4 hours to become tender.

Make bread without fuss

Your Slow Cooker can make bread making easier. Just make your yeast dough as you normally would and lay it on a piece of parchment paper. Do not worry about proofing, the slow cooker will prove and cook the bread for you.

Place the dough and parchment paper in the slow cooker and turn it up. Be sure to hold the lid during baking.

The bread should be ready in 1 to 2 hours – crunchy on the outside and tender in the middle. You may need to experiment with the cooking times as each slow cooker may vary depending on how hot the high setting actually gets.
