While slower than a walker limping through Georgia's dense mud, Location-based augmented reality game "Walking Dead: Our World" finally has a confirmed start date: July 12th.
Along with a release date, Next Games, the publisher of the game, has given a few more details on the gameplay. We know that the game will follow the model of Pokémon GO, with first-person egos replacing the sweet sparring with pocket monsters. We also know that collecting in "Walking Dead: Our World" is one thing, with players picking up characters from the TV series.
The game will also have a social component as players can team up in alliances to achieve different goals, with in-game chat coordinated their efforts.
Android users can register in advance about the game Google Play and iPhone and iPad owners can reach the same destination on the game's website.
When the game was announced in August last year, it was assumed that it would appear in addition to the new season's timing coordination. But the first half of the season came and went without mentioning a release date.
When Google announced the Google Maps API for location-based AR gaming in March, we learned that Walking Dead: Our World would build on the platform
Next Games and AMC tracked the announcement of the platform with a gameplay trailer and release Now to whet the appetite of the Walking Dead fans, Next Games has released a new trailer that promises that the game will dominate the player 's everyday life. Based on the three characters in the first frames of the video and the fact that there are two more weeks between the release date and the release date, we can expect at least two more teasers to arrive before the app.
What will the game look like? from a business perspective compared to the godfather of the location-based gaming genre? We have some premonitions.
Another game based on the Google Maps API, Jurassic World Alive, was launched last month and the game is currently ranked 28th among the free apps and number 36 on the top gross app charts for the App Store to App Annie. Meanwhile, Pokémon GO sits at # 13 on the free app chart and holds third place among the top single-player apps.
The Play Store does not rank any app among the top 50 free apps, but Pokémon GO still ranks second in the list of the most successful apps, with Jurassic World Alive appearing in number 34.
Although Pokémon GO came up with novel gameplay and an augmented reality variant, it can be argued that its success is partly a product of the celebrity brand. According to The Pokémon Company, the value of the franchise exceeds $ 54.5 billion worldwide in all media and product lines, including video games, trading cards, films and television shows.
On the other hand, The Walking Dead AR game comes to a relatively low point for the franchise, as the eighth season of the show garnered its lowest ratings since its first season. However, the show still dominates her time slot, and her spinoff, Fear the Walking Dead has seen improvements in her numbers.
But, considering only the advertising revenue of its network, we're talking about millions for this franchise, not billions. One of the franchise-based games, The Walking Dead: Road to Survival, ranks 48th among the best apps on Google Play and does not crack the top 50 for the App Store.
So, if I am a betting man, I would put my money on this game, which is also lagging behind the success of Pokémon GO, and probably just behind the Jurassic World entry.
But that does not mean Walking Dead fans, or even augmented reality enthusiasts, can not enjoy it. For what it's worth, I enjoyed the hell of Jurassic World Alive, and I'm not even such a big fan of the franchise.
