Keep your Amazon Echo in a safe place.

Sarah Tew / CNET

Your Amazon Echo gives you all the information you need to set up. However, you do not have to specify the best and safest areas in your house where you can set up the Smart Speaker. You're probably thinking, "Is it really important where I put it, as long as I can talk to Alexa from most places in my house?" Our answer is yes.

Setting up your Alexa device in certain areas of your home can damage your privacy, security or even your echo.

For example, did you know that intruders can access your Smart Speaker from the outside if it's too close to a window? We're here to tell you where not to put your echo speaker, and the best places to do it. Further information can be found below.

Near a toilet

Placing an echo near your toilet is rude. Think of all the germs left behind in this area – even in super clean bathrooms. However, if you need to have an echo speaker in your bathroom (and ok, we see the appeal), try to place it as far away from the toilet as possible.

If you can, attach it to a wall with a tape or a nail. Just make sure it's safe so it does not fall off, and remember to place it near a power outlet so you can plug it in. Keep it away from the bathtub (duh!). You do not want to fry your speaker, or you.

Do not even think about putting your echo near the bathtub!

On a sink

If you try to drown out the sounds of Alexa's voice, you should definitely put your expensive echo on a sink. However, if you want to keep it intact, never place it near water.

You do not want to risk wiring your kitchen water sprayer and drenching your echo speakers. Instead, put it on another counter that has no sink, like an island, or stash it away in a corner where it's still away from splashes of spaghetti sauce and water spray. It stays cleaner and may sound better.

At a window

Keep your smart speaker away from all windows in your home. This will not only give everyone access to your echo from the outside, but may also give them access to your other smart home devices. For example, if your car is connected to your smart speaker, it may be unlocked and started by someone else.

With the recent laser hacks on Smart Speakers tempting Alexa to execute commands, it's important to keep your echo's microphone out of a window out of sight. Fortunately, there have been no confirmed cases, but according to researchers, this is possible. However, if someone can see your device through the window, it's time to move or lock it, leaving your device unprotected. For example, someone might buy something online with their smart speaker.

Under your TV

How many commercials are out there in which "Alexa, play …" and then your echo are activated? Or, even if the TV says something that sounds like "Alexa", guess what's going to be activated.

This not only interrupts the program you are watching, but also begins recording the information you said after the command. So, if you have a private conversation and Alexa starts, you risk your privacy. Storing on a side table makes more sense and it is more likely that the voice assistant will remain silent until you give a command.

Placing the echo

  • In the corner of your living room (of course not near windows))
  • A place where it is clearly visible to you, so you can see when the ring of light lights up.
  • On your bedside table.
  • On the edge of your kitchen counter – far, far away from your sink. [19659034] On a coat or shelf
  • Mounted on a wall without a window
