You would be right. Somehow. Google does not plan to update older pixel devices to improve pixel parity functionality. Instead, the company will add a handful of features that make your Pixel or Pixel 2 ($ 649 on Google Store) more meaningful.
I called Google to see if there is a list of functions that are being transferred to the older pixels. Here's what I found out.

Android Police reported that an update was released on Monday for the Google Camera app, which brings some Pixel 3 features to older Pixel phones. It is not clear if Top Shot is included in the update.
Pixel 2 and Pixel 3 both have a feature that waits for music and then displays the title and artist on the lock screen of the phone. The feature is incredibly handy if you want to know who owns the songs you hear while in a café, but Pixel 2 lacks an important part: a history log.
The Pixel 3 creates a list of recognized songs to which you can return. According to Android Police, Pixel 2 will also receive the "Current History" feature via a future software update.
