The Pomodoro Technique

This popular technique for increasing productivity requires virtually no preparation. All you need is a timer that you most likely have on your phone.

The basic concept is to divide your day into 25-minute blocks with five-minute breaks between the blocks. These focused intervals are called "pomodoros".

Do you have a timer and some work to do? You have everything you need to try the Pomodoro technique.

After four or five Pomodoro blocks, take a longer break of 15 to 20 minutes. Get up in the breaks, walk around, do some jumps, have a snack, drink some water – basically kicking off the workstation and restarting yourself.

The Two-Minute Rule

David Allen developed this method and treats it in his book Getting Things Done . The goal is to do a series of simple, quick tasks first so you can quickly eliminate multiple tasks from your task list. You then feel inspired to continue with the more demanding tasks on your list.

If you can do it in two minutes, do it now!

To begin, rewrite your to-do list for the day. Do not worry about listing things in a particular order – just make a note of everything you need to do today.

Circling all the tasks that you can do in about two minutes, and handle them first. You will feel very satisfied if you have deleted all these things from your to-do list.

Take a break from training.

We all know that exercise stimulates the circulation in the brain, increasing creativity and productivity. A study of 200 workers found that working out increased productivity by 21 percent. But we often feel too busy or too tired to do sports.

Sport boosts your mood and gives you an energy boost so you can push through your projects.

If you feel stuck or want to postpone the day, it's time to take a break, step away from work, and get your heart rate going.

Go to the gym if you can or run around the block. Do a quick weight training on YouTube. Even 10 pushups or jumping jacks can reset things and give you the much needed energy boost to survive the rest of the day.

Blocking Digital Distractions

The lure of digital distraction is around us every day. If you hit a wall, you can easily browse Facebook or scroll through Instagram, claiming you're trying to find inspiration or pause.

With the constant appeal of social media, things can not be done, games and other distractions.

If you resort to an unproductive distraction, take action! Use tools like the iOS screen time feature to restrict access to distracting apps, or remove them if the appeal is too great. If necessary, you can also block sites on your home network.

If you block the rest of the world for a while, you can focus on what you need to do.


Autofocus is a truly useful and purposeful method invented by Mark Forster, a life coach and productivity specialist.

The first step of this method is to create a short to-do list just of today's tasks (keep a separate master list for longer projects). Take a minute to read through all the articles and then select the article you are most excited about or for which you are most interested. If nothing pops out of you, choose something that you can immerse yourself in immediately.

Choose tasks that appeal to you to speed up your work and maintain momentum.

The goal is to do something you want to do. When you then work on this task, you become focused and productive. This will ultimately help you to continue with the next task, which can be more challenging and less entertaining.
