Summer means barbecuing, and barbecuing is the way to polish your cooking outdoors. Here's what you need to know to make the most of this barbecue season.

What you need
Every grill master needs a few tools. Of course, they depend on the type of meat you use, but in general it is a good idea to have at least one of the following:
It is important to prepare your barbecue by seasoning it before cooking. Seasoning has nothing to do with food taste, just preparing the grill grates. If your grill is not brand new, preheat it and give it a good brush to remove old debris.

Some lattices have a porcelain enamel that does not need to be seasoned. Therefore check the instruction manual of your grill and avoid unnecessary efforts. Seasoning keeps barbecue grate at bay, and you should do this before each barbecue if you can.
According to the National Fire Protection Association, US firefighters released an average of 9,600 house fires per year between 2011 and 2016. Do not let your barbecue become one of those fires.
Whether you cook indoors or out, it is always important to have a fire extinguisher nearby. If you do not have a good place to store one in the open, keep it in the next entrance to your house.
Fire protection when grilling also means that the area around the grill is free of flammable objects and that the grease trap of the grill is checked. A full container should be emptied to avoid fat burning.
Build up food
Once your grill is ready to go, it's time to set up your meal. It is helpful to prepare all your meat and vegetables before you go to the grill instead of doing it while cooking. Cut vegetables, bake burger patties and marinate the chicken, then bring it outside. Casserole dishes are ideal for transportation as their high sides prevent the food from slipping off.
If you bring food from your kitchen, do not forget a clean plate to put the finished product on and clean tongs. It is important not to use a device to remove or serve cooked meat if you have used it with raw meat.
Do not forget any other barbecue accessories that you would like to have nearby, such as corncob holders or a meat thermometer. Be sure to keep paper towels within reach (but not near the flame) to avoid unexpected surprises. If your grill has a side burner, a pot coaster for hot pots is handy.
Start your barbecue
For specific instructions and timings for preheating, see your barbecue manual. In general, a charcoal grill needs more time to preheat than a gas model.
Charcoal grills take about 20 minutes to preheat, so remember to prepare your meal. If you have previously cooked with your coal, dispose of any ashes from previous applications.
Next, open all the openings on the bottom of your grill to allow maximum airflow to fan out the flame. Start your charcoal grill with a small amount of lighter fuel and some old newspaper or with a chimney starter. Check the instruction manual of your grill to find the right charcoal size and shape for your model.
Gas grills heat up pretty quickly, so you only have to budget for 10 minutes to preheat when planning your meal. Keep the grill lid high during lighting. Turn the valve of your propane container to open. Next turn on a burner and push the ignition button on your grill. As soon as the first burner lights up, turn on as many other burners as you like.
Remember to check your grease traps often and give your grill a good brushing when dirt accumulates. During the barbecue season, check your propane tank for leaks and invest in a good grill cover to protect your grill when not in use!
