6 tips and tricks for Android news on the Web

Earlier this week, Google released Messaging for Web, a service that allows you to send and receive text messages from any web browser. The site is live, but an update of the Android Messages app is required before you can use it.

You must use Android messages, unlike Samsung's News app for Galaxy users to use messages for the Web

Setup is a breeze

Seriously, if you've ever scanned a QR code, you're already ready to link the News app on your phone to your browser.

On a computer, open your browser and enter messages.android.com into the address bar. On your phone, open the Messages app and tap the menu button (top right corner). Then select News for the Web > Scan QR Code . Point your camera at the QR code on the screen of your computer.

A few seconds later, your phone's messaging app is now connected to your computer. Easy peasy

You do not have to repeat the join process every time you want to use messages for the Web. Instead, you can enable the Remember this computer button below the QR code in your browser so that the link is preserved each time you visit the site.

If you did not notice the button during setup, a prompt directly above the conversation topic asks if you want to remember, or you can click the menu icon just above the New Conversation button in the web app > Settings > Remember this computer .

If you're worried about someone else using the same computer and monitoring your messages, do not worry – you can log out (more about that in a minute).

When you actively use Messaging for the Internet, a permanent notification appears on your Android device informing you that messages are being used elsewhere. When you open the notification, you will be taken directly to the settings page of the app.

After my own tests, the warning only appears if the news website is actually used. If you (or someone else) open another tab, the alert will be removed from your phone.

Log off Remotely

If you've forgotten to log out of the Messages app on a computer, you can log out of any computer associated with your account using your phone.

To log out, use either the reminder notification or the News app explained above, open the menu, and select News for the Web .

There you'll find a list of all the computers currently linked to your account. Tap the "X" next to the computer you want to disconnect from, or select Log Out All Computers at the bottom of the page.

Drag and drop

Have a nice collection of GIFs stored on your computer? You can drag them directly into a conversation and drop them there. You can not share PDFs or Word documents, but image and video files seem to work well.
