7 unusual Alexa abilities that you should use

Alasa's library of Third-Party Skills is now enormous – there are over 30,000 skills ranging from insanely useful to very stupid. You can control your lights or order pizza with your voice. Or you can ask Alexa to make a fart sound or insult you.

Since there are so many, many of the gems are lost in the noise. Some abilities may sound also strange or useless, but prove to be very helpful. Below are seven unusual Alexa abilities you should consider.

Therapy

While Alexa will not and should not replace your therapist in the foreseeable future, the Therapy ability can help by venting your intelligent speaker. The ability will then try to determine how you feel and overwhelm you with words of encouragement.

Just to clarify, this should not be used as a substitute or alternative to actual help. It should not be taken too seriously. But it is a good way to get a much needed boost on demand. Positive words, even when spoken by an artificially intelligent computer, can be helpful.

Vintage Radio

Ever wanted to know what it was like to listen to the radio before the dawn of television? The vintage radio capability can bring the golden age of radio back to your life by pulling shows from the archives on vintageradioshows.com.

When Vintage Radio queues a new show, the name of the show and the date of the original show are displayed. You can also find the top 10 shows, series in a row or random play.

Curiosity

Do you want to learn something new every day? The ability "curiosity" will give you random but interesting facts. It's almost like going to Wikipedia and clicking Random Article .

When you open the skill for the first time, Alexa asks you which of two topics interests you most, such as fire tornadoes or aviation. If you decide on a topic, Alexa goes into that topic for a few minutes before asking you to choose between two more topics until you're done with the skill.

It is very easy to use, but easy to lose

This day in history

Similar to Curiosity, this day in history, which is operated by the History Channel, recounts all the historical events that took place on that special day of the year. While very brief, the ability is also very informative. Once the skill has told you all about the story of the current day, you can ask for other days of the year.

If you have kiddos around your house, informative skills like these are a great way to let them learn something new while having fun with the Alexa speaker. But, frankly, it's just a great, underrated skill that you can use every day.

Tomato Helper

If you work from home or have the habit of learning for hours without moving before a big test, try the Tomato Helper skill. When sitting, it is best to get up again and again to promote healthy blood flow. It is also beneficial for productivity to take a short break every 30 minutes to one hour.

The Tomato Helper ability is essentially a Pomodoro timer. When it starts, it will start a countdown of 25 minutes. After the time has elapsed, an alarm sounds. To start the five-minute break, just say "Alexa, next." Another alarm sounds. Say "Alexa, next" to start the next countdown.

Nightlight

Despite the now recognizable blue ring of light, Alexa speakers do not have a built-in nightlight function. That does not mean that you can not add one.

The Ability Night Light (and many others) allow the light to be used as a night light. Just say "Alexa, open night light". The ring lights up and stays lit until you tell him to stop. Or you can say, "Alexa, open nightlight for 10 minutes" for a 10-minute night light.

Only the temperature

Alexa offers you the current weather conditions and forecasts. The ability Big Sky is even better than the native weather app, but sometimes you do not want information overload if you just want to know the temperature. This is where Just The Temperature comes into play.

If you say, "Alexa, open Just The Temperature," you'll get exactly the temperature. It's that simple.
