The update to Windows 10, October 2018 introduced a new method for screenshots last year. Snippet is out; Snip & Sketch is in. (Actually, the snipping tool is still running around, but Microsoft says it's being phased out.)

This is how the Snip & Sketch tool works ̵

1; and other keyboard shortcuts for taking screenshots Windows 10.

Snip & Sketch

The Snip & Sketch tool is easier to access and makes sharing screenshots easier, but lacks an important feature that keeps me from the Team Snipping Tool. Click the New button at the top left of the Snip & Sketch window to start a screen capture.

The Snip & Sketch window disappears, and in its place is a small menu at the top of the screen where you can choose what kind of screenshot you want to capture – rectangular, free, or full screen. Surprisingly, it offers no way to capture a screenshot of a window, which I can do with the snipping tool. You can also click the down arrow button next to the New button in the Snip & Sketch window to delay a snip by 3 or 10 seconds.

After you have taken a screenshot, it will be loaded into Snip & Sketch where you can add annotations to it with the stylus, pen and other tools at the top of the window. Your screenshot is also copied to your clipboard and contains all the annotations you make.

Snipping Tool

The snipping tool has been around since Windows Vista. Click the New button to start the screenshot process. The default snip type is a rectangular snip, but you can also use free-form and full-screen snips with a window snip.

The snipping tool does not automatically save your screenshots – you have to manually save them before exiting the tool – and the captures are automatically copied to the clipboard.
