The iconic 1980s New York movies were originally shot in
Now A Sci-Fi Staple.
Answer: St. Louis
Despite the title of the film, Escape from New York was not published filmed in New York City. The film was indeed filmed almost exclusively in St. Louis for reasons that are not immediately clear when viewed through the lens of the present.
It Was Not Just Shot in New York As a financial and logistical nightmare, St. Louis had a pretty convincing piece of gritty realism that was free for director John Carpenter and the set crew. A huge fire in 1976 severely damaged parts of the city. While this catastrophe was a tragedy for the citizens of St. Louis, it gave these neighborhoods exactly the kind of emptiness and wear that Carpenter sought to turn his vision of New York City into a prison. The combination of already difficult sets and a flexible schedule made St. Louis a natural backdrop for the cult classic.
