It’s iPhone day! And as expected, Apple has removed the newest and greatest iPhones of all time (but that means every year, right?) With 5G. Let̵
The phones are practically identical inside. Let’s get the main difference out of the way first: the iPhone 12 has a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR display (2532 × 1170), while the Mini has a 5.4-inch display (2340 × 1080). That gives these phones 460 and 476 pixels per inch, respectively. Despite the same display as the iPhone 11, the frame of the 12 is 11 percent smaller and 15 percent thinner than its predecessor.
New glass, new old design
The display is also protected by Apple’s new “Ceramic Shield” glass. The company has partnered with Corning to create an entirely new type of glass that is stronger than anything else on the market while remaining optically clear. It has four times better drop performance than before and also offers exceptions against scratch resistance. Both phones also retain IP68 protection.
Both phones have a new design with flat edges – like a modern iPhone 4. Or a larger iPhone SE. The rounded edges of the iPhones of the past few years have disappeared. This new flat design gives the phones clean lines and tight edges. The back of the glass meets the aluminum edges seamlessly.
Both phones also have Apple’s new MagSafe for iPhone feature, which enables faster and more efficient wireless charging using magnets. The idea here is that when you use a MagSafe charger, you get the perfect orientation for wireless charging every time. But MagSafe isn’t just about charging – MagSafe also brings magnetized cases and other accessories. It’s all pretty awesome.
The fastest processor ever in a phone (according to Apple)
Under the hood, both the 12 and the 12 Mini are powered by the new Bionic A14 processor – the fastest and most powerful phone processor from Apple to date. It’s the first smartphone chip to feature 5nm technology, which essentially means it’s smaller and more efficient than before. Apple threw out a bunch of other big numbers here too –it has 11.8 billion Transistors! – but honestly, none of this is really that important to most people. All you really need to know is that this is a lightning fast chip.
The A14 Bionic also enables new camera functions on the iPhone 12 and 12 min. Both phones have a dual camera system with an ultra wide camera and a new wide camera. Deep Fusion is available now on all Cameras – including the front TrueDepth camera – for advanced features like night mode. Thanks to Dolby Vision, the cameras also support extended video recordings.
