AmazonBasics Microwave: 5 Tips You Need to Know

The AmazonBasics Microwave is a Alexa-connected heater that looks like the next step in the development of smart devices.

Since it's not like a parent's microwave oven, there are a few usage tips that will make things easier. Here's what you need to know.

Heating Beverages

This is a 700 watt microwave, not the traditional 1,000 watt power you're probably used to, which means you'll need longer cooking times. While the use of the AmazonBasics microwave requires some guesses, the microwave has preprogrammed commands that make the job easier. When you execute commands, tell Alexa what you are heating and how tall she is.

Tell Alexa with drinks how many cups you are heating. For example, you could say "Alexa, heat up a cup of coffee." Alexa is preprogrammed to know how long it needs to be heated for it to be hot steaming.

Warming up and cooking food

Drinks are pretty simple. Food is more difficult. You need to make sure that you indicate whether you actually cook food or just warm it up. In addition, sizes can become difficult.

If you're warming a plate with various remnants, think of a chicken breast, mashed potatoes, and a side of vegetables – would you say, "Alexa, make a plate warm." When you heat up a certain dish, like a piece of lasagna , you have to say more precisely, by reheating "Alexa, 5 ounces of noodles".

For some foods, you do not need to give size information. For example, you would say "Alexa cook a potato" instead of "Alexa, cook an 8 ounce potato." Potatoes, hot dogs and corn on the cob seem to be the only exception to the rule of size. You just have to let Alexa know how many of you are cooking.

Alexa can calculate food heating ranges between 0.5 and 3 cups (4 to 24 fluid ounces) or 3 to 32 ounces. In general. There are, however, some variations. See the full list of AmazonBasic commands in this PDF.

Order Popcorn

One of the most intriguing features of the AmazonBasics microwave is that it can automatically order popcorn for you.

To set up the Auto Popcorn Popup feature, open the Alexa app, tap the Devices icon (a small house shape with spoons) and select Auto Popcorn Popup . Then follow the instructions on the screen.

Once you've got your popcorn, the microwave counts how many bags you heat up, and automatically reorders when you run out of yummy supplies.

If you want to stop popcorn delivery, change brand, or change payment options, go to the Microwave Settings page in the Alexa app.

Making popcorn

Now that you've sorted popcorn, it's time to prepare something. You can use the "Alexa, Cook 2 oz. Popcorn" command to get started, or press the popcorn button .

But beware. Amazon recommends microwaves not more than 3 oz. from popcorn at a time. Large bags can burn because they do not fit exactly on the small turntable.
