The married Berkowitz announced his resignation in a statement from his Chief of Staff Jason Bockenstedt:
“It is with deep sadness and humility that I step down as mayor of the Anchorage Ward. My resignation results from unacceptable personal behavior that has impaired my ability to carry out my duties with the necessary focus and confidence. I know that my behavior has caused great harm to my family, my co-workers, city workers, and the people in our community, and I am deeply sorry. To make this transition as smooth as possible, my resignation will take effect on Friday, October 23rd at 6:00 p.m. “
According to the city’s charter, the chairman of the assembly will serve as incumbent mayor, Rivera said.
However, the assembly may vote to reorganize the assembly and elect a new chair before the mayor’s resignation takes effect in 10 days.
During Tuesday’s session, MP Jamie Allard proposed reorganization, but it failed 8-3.
