Android 101: How to create space on your phone

It can all too easily happen, especially if you have an Android phone with less than 128GB of space: one day you're trying to install a cool new game or a fascinating new app, and you can not. They have no room anymore.

Do not panic. If you're not ready to buy a new phone, and your phone does not have a convenient microSD slot for extra storage, you can probably still get a fair amount of free space with a simple house cleaning. Here are some suggestions on how to recover some of this memory.

Use the Android Share Storage Tool

Android has a built-in tool that lets you increase the available storage space on your phone. It's easy to find:

  • Go to your phone's settings and select "Memory." Among other things, information about memory usage and a link to a tool called "Smart Storage" will be displayed (more about that later) and a list of app categories.
  • Tap the blue Share Space button.
  • You can choose between the Google Files app (if installed) or the built-in "remove items" app, which allows you to share your photos and videos (if backed up), your downloaded files, and your rarely used apps

  • Under "Memory", tap a category (e.g. "Music & Audio" or "Games"). You'll get a list of all the apps that belong to this category, as well as the space they need.
  • Tap the name of the app. You can now determine the app size, how much space is occupied by the user data, and how much space the cache consumes. Two buttons allow you to either clear memory or clear cache.

(Note for newcomers: it is usually safe to delete the cache, but before you click " Erase memory ", check what your user data is, you do not want to accidentally erase any important media or documents.)

Finally, there is a switch to the" Smart Storage "feature that allows your phone to go to 30, 60, or 90 days automatically removed photos can remove. In addition, backed-up photos and videos are automatically removed when your memory is almost full.

Check Your Apps

A good way to save space is to make sure that you do not clog the works with apps that you have not used for months. It's all too easy to download an app, try it and then leave it while you devote to other things.

If you're curious about how long ago you've been using specific apps, here's how to do it:

  • Tap on your Play Store app.
  • Select the menu icon (three parallel lines) in the upper left corner and select "My Apps & Games".
  • In the top menu, tap Installed Line
  • Find the top line that starts "On This Device …". To the right is an icon that allows you to sort your list of apps. Tap it and select "Last used".
  • The apps you last used are shown at the top. Swipe down to find out which apps you have not used for a while.

You can also find out if there are any apps you own. & # 39; Will not be used for long with a file manager (see below).

Save your photos online.

Photos and videos are among the most space-consuming items on your phone. If you have an Android phone, you may already upload your photos to Google Photos, so you can remove them from your phone.

First, make sure you support Upload your photos to your Google Account. When you go to your main page in the photo app, the message "Backup Complete" should be displayed at the top. If you do not do this, you should do the following to start the backup:

  • Open the photo app. At the top left, tap the menu icon (three parallel lines) and select Settings.
  • Choose Backup & Sync.
  • Make sure the Backup & Sync option at the top of the page is set to On. You should also check which account is listed under "Backup account". If you have more than one account, you can switch to the account you want to use.

Now that you're sure your photos are backed up, you can do so Delete them from your phone and it's very likely that you'll see a hint at the top of the Photo app home page to help you free up space on your device. If not, it's easy.

  • Tap on the me nüsymbol.
  • Tap the "Free up space" menu selection. A pop-up window shows how much space and how many items are being removed. Select "Share XX GB".

If you have your phone for more than a few months, you've probably accumulated it A lot of outdated, duplicated or simply unwanted files that take up a lot of disk space. With file managers like Google Files, you can check your various file folders and see what files are there. Many have features that allow you to search for and delete memory-wasting files (such as junk files, duplicate files, or oversized files) without having to manually search them.

In most of these apps, this is the case You have the option of browsing the files that the app should delete to make sure nothing is removed that you really want to keep.

Still no more space? Unfortunately – or fortunately, if you are looking for a good excuse – it may be time to think about a new phone, one with more storage space and perhaps the ability to outsource your data to a micro SD card.
