Apple released and then got iOS 14.1 for the iPhone – but you can still install the GM Build “iOS & iPhone :: Gadget Hacks”

Apple mistakenly released iOS 14.1 for the iPhone as a stable OTA update on Tuesday, October 13th, shortly after the special event that announced the iPhone 12, 12 mini, 12 Pro, and 12 Pro Max. Given Apple’s recent track record, this is not surprising.

Over the past few years, Apple has released beta updates repeatedly, with the release notes dating back a few hours. The update plans seemed to be random, iOS 13.2 was withdrawn due to stability issues, as well as a beta update for iOS 12.0 and an iPadOS The 13.1 beta update was canceled because it was blocking iPads.

The iOS 14.1 software update was incorrectly released by Apple as a wireless update for everyone 1

9 days after iOS 14.0.1 was released at 11:30 a.m. PDT. Apple retrieved the update from the developer portal and then added it again as a GM (Golden Master) update (Build 18A8395) for developers. This is the final build before a public release. That means the general public will not have access to the update until Apple decides to release it publicly.

It’s not yet clear what to expect from iOS 14.1 as the update is so new. Apple’s last public update, iOS 14.0.1, was mainly a stability update for iPhones that fixed issues with the news widget and the default browser and mail apps, among other things.

There were no release notes for iOS 14.1 GM for developers.

How to install iOS 14.1 on your iPhone

In an odd move when Apple pulled iOS 14.1 and released it as GM on the developer portal, it only gave us the recovery images, so there is no way to wirelessly update via your profile. You can use the recovery image for your iPhone available in the developer portal (installation with Finder). While you must be a registered developer to access the developer portal, anyone can install the GM build using the links below from the Finder.

If it’s a stable public version, you can download iOS 14.1 from Settings -> General -> Software Updates and install it on your iPhone. When the update appears, follow the onscreen instructions to download iOS 14.1 and install it on your device. If you have “Automatic Updates” turned on, you can simply allow your iPhone to update overnight.
