Apple released the first beta for iOS 12.1 on Tuesday, September 18th. The update comes just one day after the official release of iOS 12. For developers, it's the first beta release since the "Gold Master" version on Sept. 12.
The biggest change with iOS 12.1 is the return of Group FaceTime. The feature was promised for iOS 12, but delayed with the release of dev beta 7 at rest. However, you can only use Group FaceTime with those who are running 12.1 and can only start one call from a group chat. Names of members of this group with iOS 12 or lower appear in your group chat, but can not join your call.
The only other notable change in this first developer beta is its additional compatibility with Xcode Beta 1
To download and update your iPhone to iOS 12.1 dev Beta 1, you must first be a registered developer with a valid configuration profile. If you've enabled iOS 12's new "Automatic Updates," you can have the software updated overnight. To download the beta version now, start the app settings, select "General" and then "Software Update". Tap "Download and Install" and follow the instructions on the screen to download and install iOS 12.1 dev beta 1.

Apple has just launched the iOS 12.1 Beta, which means the new iPhone X S and X S Max is being shipped with iOS 12. However, it is possible the iPhone X R will ship with 12.1 shipped as Apple's 2018 "budget" iPhone has a delayed release. It all depends on whether Apple decides to make iOS 12.1 a stable version of the public.
