The first major update for iOS 12 will be released on Tuesday, October 30, after Apple's presentation for iPad and Mac is completed. While iOS 12.1 is the first official update for iPhones since iOS 12.0.1, beta testers have an exclusive first-hand look at all the new features of the latest operating system. What's new in iOS 12.1 and how can you be one of the first to experience the new update?
Apple made a strange mistake in confirming the release date of iOS 12.1. While the October 29 press release clearly states that the software will arrive on Tuesday, October 30, the press release preview was claimed to have a release date of "today," referring to October 29. To be clear, it's slated to be released on Tuesday after Apple's event, not before.
Developers and public software testers are quite familiar with iOS 1
Apple's iOS 12.1 is considered a "minor" update, but not in the same way as 12.0.1. Apple has released the latter to fix specific connection errors in iOS 12, hence the ".0.1" label. On the other hand, 12.1 introduces brand new features for iOS 12 users.
One feature that is guaranteed to make a splash is Group FaceTime. Originally scheduled for release as part of iOS 12, Apple tacitly delayed the feature in fall 2018 indefinitely. Access to 32-person chats is yours once you update your iPhone.
In addition to Group FaceTime, Apple released more than 70 new emojis with 12.1 – 76 to be exact. New additions include new hair colors and options, new smileys and even the addition of cream cheese to Bagel Emoji.
These are just two of the new features that ship with iOS 12.1. Take a look at our complete list to learn about everything new
How can I download it?
Apple's iOS 12.1 will be available on all compatible iPhones via an OTA (Over-the-Air) update Tuesday, October 30th. If your iPhone can run iOS 12, it can run 12.1. Just as a refresher, here are all compatible iPhone models:
You can find this update in your settings under "System Update" in "General". Alternatively, you can turn on iOS 12's Automatic Updates feature to simply have the update installed overnight.
Not all iPhones may receive the update immediately. If you do not enable Automatic Updates, check your System Update page regularly.
