Another giant piece of the mysterious augmented reality puzzle, Magic Leap, came into effect on Wednesday when AT & T announced that it would be the exclusive vehicle for the device.
"AT & T is excited to combine our groundbreaking technologies network, content platform and a huge customer ecosystem with the efforts of Magic Leap to build the next generation of computers," said John Donovan, CEO of AT & T. T Communications.
"We are designing and delivering the future of entertainment and connectivity, and this exclusive arrangement combined with our 5G leadership position will open up new opportunities and experiences."
The pairing will make the Magic Leap One: Creator Edition one of the largest Give mobile operators in the US that you can work with it rolls out its category of challenging device. Fans of the original iPhone will notice that Apple also selected AT & T as its first exclusive launch partner in 2007, before the smartphone was finally made available to other carriers.
It now seems as if Magic Leap wanted to re-create some of the magic that eventually led to the iPhone changed the cell phone space forever.
"We joined AT & T because we believe in a combination vision of expanding high-speed networks, edge computing, and deep integration with creative content," said Rony Abovitz, Magic Leap Founder and CEO. "Combining the power of the evolving AT & T network with Magic Leap's spatial computing platform can transform the computing experience for people."
Announcement does not announce exact start date (it's still "later this year"), we know now that the first cities to get Magic Leap One at AT & T stores will be Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles and San Francisco (with additional markets to be announced later).
On its website, Magic Leap also notes that the new AT & T relationship is part of its Series D Equity round of financing. This part of the transaction includes giving Donovan "Magic Leap Board of Directors Observer Rights", a role that generally allows participation in board meetings but does not include voting rights.
The date of the official partnership announcement is coming just a few hours before Magic Leap will deliver the first live demonstration of its software on the headset during a broadcast via Twitch, which is scheduled for broadcast at 2 pm ET. Now that we know how good the mainstream device will be in terms of a mobile operator, there are likely to be a lot more eyes to see as the company tries to do its first real "magic trick".
