Answer: Napoleon III
If you are a margarine fan, then you have no one else to thank for butter substitute than Charles-Louis Napoleon Bonaparte or Napoleon III, the first elected president of France and nephew and heir of Napoleon Bonaparte.
In 1869, a butter shortage caused Napoleon III. To award a prize the first person who could produce a nutritious and shelf-stable fat to replace butter in the pantries of French houses and military bases.
A French chemist named Hippolyte Mège-Mouriès won the prize with his blend of beef tallow and skim milk. He called his mixture Oleomargarine. On the way the name was shortened and we know it today as pure old margarine.
