It's October, which makes the next three months the most expensive of the year. And the more you travel on vacation, the more vulnerable your house will be to burglary.

The question is, how can you protect your home without incurring additional costs for travel, gifts, food and Black Friday? Fortunately, smart home devices are getting cheaper every year. Here are a handful, each under $ 20, that can help you secure your home when visiting your family or friends during the holidays.

One of the most obvious deterrents for potential burglars is an occupied house. Throw some chic lamps into your kitchen, living room or porch, schedule them to be turned on at certain times during the night, and instantly make your home less attractive to the mischievous thief.

One of the most wallet-friendly options: the Wyze pear. You can get one for $ 8 or four for $ 30 – not too much more than a normal LED bulb. These gadgets connect directly to your Wi-Fi and are perfect for planning and forgetting appointments.

While we talk about deterrence, it may be worth thinking about dummy cameras. Especially for larger objects where you want to cover a lot of ground without breaking the bank, counterfeit security cameras can make your house look like a closed building. Here you can order a pack of four dummy cams for under $ 20.

Of course the deterrence only brings you so far. If a burglar intrudes into your home, you still want to be alerted by a device to the vulnerability.

Megan Wollerton of CNET has pointed out: "The era of the $ 200 surveillance camera is over." Nowadays, there are smart cams for $ 26 – yes, so cheap – that most of the smarts of the high-end models offer. The Wyze Cam is the most wallet-friendly smart cam. It offers free personal alerts, 14 days of cloud storage, and an SD card slot for continuous recording. That's pretty incredible for the price.

If you are less interested in recording specific rooms and are more interested in monitoring in-door entrances, then the safety sensor set may be better for you. Again, Wyze has the say: A $ 20 kit that includes a bridge (which connects to the Wyze camera and supports the devices in communication), two door / window sensors, and a motion sensor.

For the price, that's another solid thing. For a small apartment, or if you only cover your front and back doors, this kit could cover you for super cheap solid.

A relatively new feature set of echoes, Alexa Guard can help you keep one ear (or some far-field microphones) in your house when you're not there. An Echo Dot, which you can buy for $ 25 a lot, is the cheapest way to get Alexa Guard in your house. But if you already have an echo, it's completely free.

Just say "Alexa, I'm going" to turn the feature on. Then you hear echoes of broken glass, alarms or sounds from people moving around in your house (it can make a difference between pets and people) – and you get a mobile alarm when something is heard.

It can be difficult for renters to increase security at home, as the installation can be very costly – especially when you talk about smart deadbolts. So if you want to save a little more security with little effort and money, consider a retrofit lock like this one.

Devices like this, although not connected via Wi-Fi, offer clever ways to add another barrier to burglars, which means a little peace of mind for the frightened homeowner.
