Conway says more “hidden, covert” Trump voters will help him win re-election said on Thursday President Trump has “legitimized a dark side of human nature” in remarks at Grace Lutheran Church in Kenosha, Wisconsin.
Speaking at a community meeting about the recent riots over the police shooting of Jacob Blake, a black man, Biden said the riot was not entirely Trump’s fault, but the president encouraged racists and at a time when the nation was racist tensions sparked is deeply divided.
The former Vice President shared a story about how protests made his hometown of Wilmington, Del., Years ago after the murder of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. had destroyed. He said he had recently looked over Wilmington and had brief encouragement to see how it had been rebuilt.
“I said don’t tell me nothing can change … but I made a mistake in something,” said Biden. “I thought you could beat hate. It’s just hiding. And when someone with authority breathes oxygen under that rock, it legitimizes those people to come out from under the rock. ”
Biden brought up Trump’s response to the white supremacists marching in Charlottesville, Virginia, as evidence of the president’s failed leadership on race.
“That is not everything [Trump’s] Guilt, ”added Biden. “But it legitimized a dark side of human nature. What it did, however, was also expose what had not been given enough attention. The underlying racism institutionalized in the United States still exists and has been around for 400 years. So we have a situation like here in Kenosha. “
In the church, Biden heard from parishioners, including a white shop owner who said their business had been destroyed by rioters and a black lawyer who asked him to look into criminal justice reform.
Earlier in the day, Biden had teamed up with Blake’s father, brother, two sisters, and members of his legal team. Blake and his mother came out of the hospital.
“He talked about how nothing would defeat him, how he wouldn’t give up whether he left or not,” said Biden.
Blake’s attorney, Ben Crump, said the conversation was focused on “changing the different treatment of minorities in police interactions and the impact of selection Kamala HarrisKamala HarrisA Warning to the Democrats: Small Business Owners Get Angry – Very Angry The Hill’s Campaign Report: Biden Crimes Police Shootings | Who will moderate the debates? “The vice president told the family that he believes the best of America is in all of us and that we must all appreciate our differences when we come together in America’s great melting pot,” said Crump. “It was very evident that Vice President Biden cared about that as he gave Jacob Jr. a sense of humanity and treated him as a person worthy of consideration and prayer.”
Trump toured Kenosha earlier this week to highlight the companies that had been destroyed as part of the protests. The president has accused urban democratic officials of allowing protesters to destroy property.
The president’s campaign relied on the message that the nation’s cities would be violent and uninhabitable spaces if Biden were elected president.
“Americans have not heard any denunciation from Antifa or other left-wing agitators who have been upset in American cities from coast to coast,” said Tim Murtaugh, spokesman for the Trump campaign. “He didn’t say anything about Wisconsin Gov. Biden gave a speech earlier this week denouncing the violent aspects of the protests.
“Let’s get something straight here, protesting is protesting … but none of that warrants burning, looting or anything,” Biden said. “So no matter how angry you get if you loot or burn yourself, you should be held accountable just as much as someone who did something else, period.”
Biden leads Trump in Wisconsin by 4 points according to RealClearPolitics average. The Trump campaign accused Biden of politicizing the riots.
“Joe Biden took a political trip to Kenosha today – his first visit to Wisconsin – after saying for months he couldn’t travel because of the science of the coronavirus,” Murtaugh said. “What changed was political science as he knows he is seriously falling in the polls.”
