Compton Shooting: $ 100,000 reward for finding a rifleman who ambushed LA County MPs

The MPs – a 31-year-old mother and a 24-year-old man – were hospitalized on Saturday night and “fought for their lives,” the sheriff’s department said.

As of Sunday, “it looks like they will be able to recover,” said Sheriff Alex Villanueva.

“We’ll see how that works out in the long term. We don’t know yet, but they survived the worst.”

Local officials announced a $ 100,000 reward for information leading to the gunman’s arrest and conviction.

How the ambush unfolded

The shooting took place just before 7 p.m. on Saturday at the MLK Transit Center in Compton, the Los Angeles County Sheriffs Department said.

The gunman walked over to the passenger side of the MPs̵

7; car, raised a pistol and shot both MPs, Captain Kent Wegener said.

The sheriff’s department tweeted a video about the shooting and the shooter running away.
The shooter shot at the MP's car on Saturday without provocation.

“This is just a grim reminder that this is a dangerous job and that actions and words have consequences. Our job is not getting easier because people don’t like law enforcement,” said Villanueva. “It makes me angry. It scares me at the same time.”

Both MPs were sworn in 14 months ago, the sheriff said.

Trump, Biden and Schiff denounce the attack

Both President Donald Trump and Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden condemned the shooting.

“If we find this person, we have to get a lot faster with our courts and we have to get a lot tougher with our convictions,” Trump told a group of supporters in Las Vegas on Sunday.

Biden called the shooting “absolutely incomprehensible”.

“Lawlessness and violence against police officers are unacceptable, outrageous and completely counterproductive to the pursuit of peace and justice in America – as are the actions of those who fuel such attacks,” Biden said in a statement.

The Democratic US representative Adam Schiff, whose district includes parts of Los Angeles County, described the attack as a “cowardly”.

“Every day police officers put themselves at risk to protect our community,” tweeted Schiff. “I hope the perpetrator of this cowardly attack can be brought to justice quickly.”
