The MPs – a 31-year-old mother and a 24-year-old man – were hospitalized on Saturday night and “fought for their lives,” the sheriff’s department said.
As of Sunday, “it looks like they will be able to recover,” said Sheriff Alex Villanueva.
“We’ll see how that works out in the long term. We don’t know yet, but they survived the worst.”
Local officials announced a $ 100,000 reward for information leading to the gunman’s arrest and conviction.
How the ambush unfolded
The gunman walked over to the passenger side of the MPs̵
“This is just a grim reminder that this is a dangerous job and that actions and words have consequences. Our job is not getting easier because people don’t like law enforcement,” said Villanueva. “It makes me angry. It scares me at the same time.”
Both MPs were sworn in 14 months ago, the sheriff said.
Trump, Biden and Schiff denounce the attack
Both President Donald Trump and Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden condemned the shooting.
“If we find this person, we have to get a lot faster with our courts and we have to get a lot tougher with our convictions,” Trump told a group of supporters in Las Vegas on Sunday.
Biden called the shooting “absolutely incomprehensible”.
“Lawlessness and violence against police officers are unacceptable, outrageous and completely counterproductive to the pursuit of peace and justice in America – as are the actions of those who fuel such attacks,” Biden said in a statement.
The Democratic US representative Adam Schiff, whose district includes parts of Los Angeles County, described the attack as a “cowardly”.
