If you’re just starting out with a Mac after years of using Windows, learning how to copy and paste can seem a little daunting. How do you do this when the shortcuts and menus are often different?

Fortunately, it’s not as big a jump as it might seem. Windows commands often have close parallels on macOS, and there are several ways to accomplish the same thing. We’ll show you how to copy and paste using keyboard shortcuts and the onscreen interface on a Mac.

The fastest way to copy and paste on a Mac is by using keyboard shortcuts. The differences to Windows are very small here – you just have to remember a different key. After that, it should quickly become second nature.

  1. Click and drag the mouse to select the text, media, or files that you want to copy. They should be highlighted.
  2. To copy, press Command and C (short Command-C) at the same time. The Edit menu at the top left should flash briefly to confirm the command.
  3. Navigate to where you want to paste the content, e.g. B. a text position, a text field or a folder.
  4. Press Command and V (Command-V) at the same time to paste.
  5. If you hold down Shift while pressing Command-V, macOS may match the style.

Don’t worry if you don’t like shortcuts or if you don’t have easy access to a keyboard. Here’s how to just copy and paste menu items on a Mac.

  1. While using the app you want to copy content from, click and drag the mouse to select the text, media, or files you want. They should be highlighted.
  2. Click the Edit menu in the upper left and select Copy.
  3. Navigate to where you want to paste the content, e.g. B. a text position, a text field or a folder. It can be in another app or in the Finder.
  4. Click the Edit menu again and choose Paste.
  5. You can also choose Insert and Match Style if necessary.

As with Windows, you can right-click to copy and paste on a Mac. This is particularly useful when copying files to your computer, a picture on a website, or other content where shortcuts and the menu bar are inconvenient. It will look familiar again when you’re used to Windows, although this can vary.

  1. If you are selecting a single picture or file, right-click the item. You can alternately hold down the control key while clicking the left button.
  2. When selecting text or multiple items, click and drag (with the left button) as usual to select them and right click on what you have selected.
  3. A context menu should appear. Left click to select Copy. It can be a variant, e.g.[file name]. ”
  4. Navigate to where you want to paste the content, e.g. B. a text position, a text field or a folder.
  5. Right-click where you want to paste the content and choose Paste or Paste Item.
