Creating newsletter-style columns in Word
Arranging your text across columns is an essential part of creating a newsletter. Fortunately, Word does not need to insert multiple text boxes (though you can definitely do so). What's better is that you can first enter your content and then format it.
There are several ways to do this. First, you can apply a column style to the entire document. Go to the "Layout" tab and select "Columns".
When selected, a drop-down menu appears. You can select one of the desired options, which automatically applies to the entire document by default. Let's go ahead and pick "Three."
Upon selection, you will receive the following:
<img class = "alignnone size-full wp-image-407661" data-pagespeed-lazy-src = "https: // www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/xthree-columns-example.png.pagespeed.gp+jp+jw+pj+ws+js+rj+rp+rw+ri+cp+md. ic.SIO3nhdVV2.png "alt =" Three columns, example "width =" 643 "height =" 394 "src =" /pagespeed_static/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif "onload =" pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon (this); " onerror = "this.onerror = null;]
Not bad, right? It looks good, but there may be situations where you want to format some parts of the newsletter differently, which is fine.
If To format a single paragraph in columns, select this paragraph.
<img class = "alignnone size-full wp-image-407662" data-pagespeed-lazy-src = "https: //www.howtogeek. com / wp-content / uploads / 2019/03 / xhighlighted-paragraph.png.pagespeed.gp + jp + jw + pj + ws + js + r + rp + rw + r + cp + md.ic.-Q– CbTmRr.png "alt =" Highlighted Paragraph "width =" 637 "height =" 311 "src =" /pagespeed_static/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif "onload =" pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon (this); "onerror =" this.onerror = null; Next, go back to the Columns options and select the option that meets your needs. This example uses "links".
As you can see, the selected paragraph assumed the column format "Left", while the other content remained untouched.
What if you want to keep the first paragraph in standard format, but want the rest of the content to adopt the two-column format? Place the cursor on the section where you want to start formatting, in this case the beginning of paragraph 2.
<img class = "alignnone size-full wp-image-407665" data-pagespeed-lazy-src = "https://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/xbeginning-of-paragraph.png.pagespeed.gp+jp+jw+pj+ws+js+rj+rp+rw+ ri + cp + md.ic.951Lj-RGOO.png "alt =" start of paragraph "width =" 649 "height =" 295 "src =" /pagespeed_static/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif "onload =" pagespeed.lazyLoadImages. loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon (this); "onerror =" this.onerror = null; pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon Column Options This time choose "More Columns" from the bottom of the list of options.
<img class = "alignnone size -full wp-image-407666 "data-pagespeed-lazy-src =" https://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/xmore-columns.png.pagespeed.gp+jp+jw + pj + ws + js + rj + rp + rw + ri + cp + md.ic.Xhx9poR5dF.png "alt =" Other columns "width =" 147 "height =" 250 "src =" / pagespeed_static / 1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif "onload =" pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon (this); "onerror =" this.onerror = null; pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon (this); "At the top of the window is the" Preferences "group, where you'll find the same options as in the previous drop-down menu, we'll go ahead and pick" Three. "But if you have four or more columns You can enter the desired amount in the "Number of columns" option under the "Preferences" group.
In "Width and spacing" You can adjust the size and spacing of the columns By default, all columns inherit from columns 1, leaving the same width between all columns Clear the check box next to Equal Column Width to adjust the other columns separately.
Note that the Line Between option creates a vertical dividing line between text columns Now click on the box next to "Apply to." A drop-down menu will be displayed Since we have placed the cursor at the beginning of the second paragraph, the first paragraph does not take the format change if we select "This point forward". Select it and click "OK".
Now, while the first paragraph is a single column, all the other content in the document is contained on the three-column form.
Another trick is adding section breaks to the document and then formatting each section. After inserting the section break, return to the Columns window again. You'll notice that a new option appears next to "Apply to" in the list. As the name implies, this new option applies the settings only to this section of the document. Select the desired preset, choose "This section" from the "Apply to" options, and then click "OK."
