Cuomo told reporters Wednesday evening that the president was now “persona non grata” in his home state and would need an “army” to protect himself if he walked down the street in New York.
“Forget about bodyguards, he’d better have an army if he thinks he’s walking down the street in New York. The New Yorkers want nothing to do with him,” Cuomo told reporters, several news outlets reported.
“It’s more of the same of him. It’s political, it’s free. And it’s illegal. But it’s another attempt to kill New York City, ”the governor added to the New York Post.
The president responded in a tweet Thursday morning, blaming Cuomo for the number of deaths in New York from the novel coronavirus.
“11,000 people died in nursing homes because of their incompetence!” the president wrote.
New York Governors Andrew Cuomo have the worst record for death and China virus. 11,000 people alone died in nursing homes due to his incompetence!

A White House official referred The Hill to the president’s tweet when asked for further comments.
The dispute follows the President’s signature on Wednesday of a five-page memo instructing federal agencies to submit possible funding cuts for programs in four cities: Seattle; Portland, Ore .; New York City; and Washington, DC President says officials have allowed these cities “to turn into lawless zones,” with months of protests against police treatment of black Americans.
“My administration will not allow federal tax dollars to fund cities that allow themselves to turn into lawless zones,” Trump said, according to a copy of the memo.
“To ensure that federal funds are not excessively wasted or spent in a way that directly violates our government’s promise to protect life, liberty and property, it is imperative that the federal government review the use of federal funds by jurisdiction, anarchy and allow violence and destruction in America’s cities, ”it continued.
In a tweet, Cuomo described the order as an “illegal stunt” aimed at targeting Trump’s political enemies.
“President Trump has been actively trying to punish NYC since day one. He raided COVID New York. He refuses to provide funding that states and cities MUST receive to recover,” the governor wrote.
President Trump has been actively trying to punish NYC since day one.
He had COVID raided New York.
It refuses to provide funding that states and cities MUST be given in order to recover.
He’s not a king. He can’t “defuse” NYC.
It’s an illegal stunt.
