Cuphead Arriving on Nintendo Switch means that a great deal of people will experience the exciting grief that is Grim Matchstick. Xbox One and PC users who played Cuphead know that Grim Matchstick is the beginning of the serious challenge. The Fire Spit Dragon holds court in a massive spiral lock in Inkwell Isle Two. Even though you still have more than a handful of bosses after you've fallen Grim Matchstick, "Fiery Frolic" may be the toughest fight in the game outside the two final bosses.
To defeat Grim Matchstick, you need an expert in speed and the ability to think ahead. Our Cuphead Grim Matchstick Guide contains tips for each of the three phases of the Dragon. Like all Cuphead levels, the design of art style and sound has become a truly joyous experience. It may take more than a few tries just to get used to the first phase. You may die early because this fight is unlike any other you have played until then. Instead, you have to jump over small clouds that constantly move across the screen. Think of it as one of the Super Mario levels that keeps moving and pushing you forward if you do not want to die. The clouds are also not organized in a neat pattern. Sometimes you just have to get up from one to land on another; At other times you have to jump to land safely. If you fall from a cloud, you lose a hit point, and you only have a few seconds to safely position Cuphead on another cloud before the next hit point appears.
The dragon is quite big, as long as you do it You face him, you can put punches in his frame. Of course, Grim will try to stop you by unleashing some tricky attacks from himself.
When Grim arches upright and begins to whirl his eyes, he shoots at laser rings. First, there are three rings. Later in the stage, he shoots four. The last ring is always pink, which means you can parry it if you want. The most important thing about his laser attack is that he always directs the lasers to where you were when they started to form in his eyes. If you're fast enough, you can avoid them altogether without having to jump over them. The worst place where he makes the laser rings is at eye level, just because your view is affected by the skipping.
Grim shoots fireballs from his mouth as well. He will inflate his chest and take a deep breath before releasing one or two fireballs. The fireballs move up and down in a predictable zigzag pattern on the screen. The only way to avoid the lonely fireball is to walk past it. The best way to avoid the double fireballs is to jump over the top flint before moving to the top of the screen. Alternatively, you can switch between the two fireballs, but this requires better timing.
What makes Grim's first phase so tricky is not the fireballs and laser rings themselves, but his cock attack. Throughout the phase, you will hear a "wiggle" two or three times and see the end of Grim's tail at the bottom of the screen. This is your keyword to move quickly. In a moment, the tail will ram up and form a vertical block over the sky. If you touch the tail, you lose a hit point. The tail attack is one for which you just have to get a feel for it. A good rule of thumb is that the tail on the right half of the screen moves to the left half and vice versa. Because the clouds are constantly moving. If you are not careful, you may be caught in an inescapable situation.
Fortunately, this phase lasts only about 30 seconds if you shoot down grimly. Jump and jump and avoid his three attacks.
We will say that it may be best to just restart the fight if you take damage in the first phase. You will probably need some replacement health later in this fight.
Grimm's second phase
Grimm's second phase is the simplest of the three, once you've figured out the pattern. At this stage, Grim positions himself on the left side of the screen, thrusts his tongue out, and a marching band of small fire dolls runs over his tongue. The main thing you have to avoid are the fire types. Some of them stay in their tracks, squat down, and then jump across the screen in an upward-pointing cannonball. This move is choreographed so you can see if they are going left or right.
The best way to avoid these attacks is to stay in the highest cloud on the screen. If you are at a high level, it is best to jump and land safely on the same cloud so as not to get hit. The smoke from Grim's nostrils will also burn up regularly. So you can get close.
As the Movement of Clouds draws you closer and closer to Grim, we strongly recommend using the Chaser or Roundabout weapon, which has the power to strike a target without looking in its direction. This phase is very inconvenient if you have to deal with Grimm when shooting, simply because you always have to get away from him.
As you said in the first phase, if you take damage here you might just want to start over
Grimm's Final Phase
Grimm's final phase is without a doubt one of the hardest segments in the game game. Grim now has three heads, each of which fires small balls of fire that pull themselves on you in a strange, elusive move. While we said that the chaser is a great weapon for the second phase, you do not want to use it at all while it spits you with fireballs. When you hit a fireball with one shot, it breaks and sends a small fire to the north, south, east, and west. These can be very difficult to avoid when they jump over the clouds.
The trick is to avoid the fireballs, but never make contact with them during the shooting. It takes a bit of practice, and you probably make a mistake or two (hence the need for complete health is required.)
Grim's second attack is to turn one of his heads into a flamethrower. The big flame covers the middle part of the screen. They must either be in a low or high cloud when the attack starts so as not to be hit. In our experience, climbing is the best idea, as you have more room to work during the attack. This also gives you the ability to fend off a series of shots without fear of being hit by fireballs. You can switch back to the chaser here to make sure you hit it repeatedly.
Grim will repeat this cycle until he is finally disabled.
