Disable Facebook's Face Recognition feature

  Facebook privacy settings

The Facebook privacy settings are handy.

Jason Cipriani / CNET

Facebook recently removed a setting that controls how the company uses face recognition for photos published on the social network. It used to be that you only activated one setting to identify and tag yourself and your friends. Now Facebook automatically scans your photos to suggest people you can tag based on the people in your photo. Notifications will also be sent if your face appears on a photo posted by someone else ("Hey, someone posted a photo you're on right now") or if someone took a picture of you as a profile picture uploads.

You can still disable face detection, but you know that Facebook will continue to scan photos of you and your friends if you leave face detection turned on.

Facebook says that this only serves to mark other people in your profile posts, Face Detection Technology has become a hot-button privacy issue. Facebook itself is no stranger to dispute its privacy practices .

If you are not prompted to control facial recognition, turn it off.

If you're new to Facebook or have previously used the tag setting to control face scans and suggestions, you'll need to familiarize yourself with a new setting. You should receive a Facebook notification that guides you through the message. If you miss it, you can disable face detection with just a few clicks or touches.

Accessing Facebook Settings from Your Desktop Browser

If you are using Facebook on a computer, you can access this settings page and click Edit next to the Face Recognition setting and No choose ].

If this feature is turned off, Facebook will no longer scan your photos using face recognition technology. This does not mean that you can not tag friends in photos, just that Facebook does not recommend people to tag.
