Disney finally makes an Artemis Fowl movie based on the popular children's book series, nearly 20 years after the original release date. The story has everything from centaurs to criminal masterminds, and Dame Judi Dench is in the cast. Strap on for a twisted fairy tale.
The plot: What is it about?
Artemis Fowl is a 12-year-old genius who lives with his bodyguard in a mansion in Ireland. Before the story begins, his father, the crime lord, has disappeared along with the millions of Fowl family, and his mother has broken away from reality.
For some time, Artemis has tracked down the existence of the subterranean world of fairies and gets an alcoholic sprite in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, a copy of his popular book. He translates the Gnomish runes and uses the information to kidnap the elite officer of the Lower Elements Police (LEP) and the fairy Holly Short, who keeps her as a ransom in his family's mansion.
Artemis and his bodyguard Butler compete in the hostage situation with a number of other characters from the fairy world, including LEPrecon Commander Julius Root, the ingenious centaur Foaly and the criminal kleptomaniac dwarf Mulch Diggums.
The first of the eight-book Artemis Fowl series written by the Irish author Eoin Colfer was published nearly two decades ago in 2001 (and the boy makes me old).
