4K big-screen TVs have slowly dropped in price and are now affordable for most shoppers. As a result, the appetite for 4K movies and TV shows is greater than ever before, even with streaming services like Amazon Prime Video.
Regardless of whether you have access to a Smart TV platform, a TV stick, or a set-top box, new Amazon Prime Video service subscribers, including 4K televisions, are asking themselves probably owns what kind of 4K content there is, if anyone can be televised on the TV.
Fortunately, the short answer is "Yes": Amazon Prime Video supports 4K movies and shows. However, that's not the whole story, so here's what we're going to look at in the following to see what kind of 4K content the Amazon's Netflix rival has to offer.
How to Watch 4K UHD and HDR Content on Amazon Prime Video
If you have Amazon Prime You can stream a variety of 4K-quality movies and shows as well as virtually all original creations of the service. So if you have a supported 4K TV, you can stream Amazon Prime's original releases like Jack Ryan by Tom Clancy, The Grand Tour, The Man In The High Castle, The Expanse, and many more at 2160p resolution.
Nearly all of Amazon Prime Video's original shows also support High Dynamic Range (HDR) features that should give these shows a wider color palette and better contrast.
The Amazon support page states that the 4K videos support three HDR standards. One is just the basic HDR standard, and another uses standards created by Dolby Labs. The shows supporting this standard are called "Dolby Vision". The other standard is HDR10 +, and the shows that use it are called as such.
In addition to the thousands of Amazon Prime Video movies and TV episodes available with an Amazon Prime subscription (some of which are 4K compliant), the service also offers movies and TV shows to rent or buy on. An increasing number of these films and shows are now available in 4K UHD resolution. You can expect to pay more for renting or buying these movies and shows in 4K than for their HD and SD versions.
What internet download speeds are required?
Officially, the company says they need an Internet connection with at least 15 Mbps for download speeds to stream Amazon Prime video content in 4K resolution. While these are some very demanding requirements from Amazon, keep in mind that Netflix's download speed requirements are even higher for its 25Mbps 4K videos.
Do I have to buy a more expensive streaming plan?
Unlike Netflix, where Amazon Prime Video forces its customers to pay more for accessing the supported videos in 4K resolution, the business plan is a prize for everyone. In other words, when you sign up for Amazon Prime from either the main service or the standalone video plan, you get access to all the video resolutions at no extra charge, including 4K. This also applies only to the films and series as part of the Amazon Prime Video subscription. Videos that you need to borrow or purchase directly through the service may have a higher price if you want to watch them in 4K.
