Enable two-factor authentication for Twitter

Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) is an excellent security tool because it makes it harder for attackers to invade your account. Most apps make it pretty easy to turn on 2FA, and Twitter is no exception. To activate it:

First, you must be logged into your Twitter account, either on the Twitter website or in the Twitter app for Android. iPhone or iPad. The process is almost identical except for the starting point for both.

The Twitter 2FA process sets SMS messages by default. If you want to use an authenticator app, you must perform this procedure and then switch from using SMS to using an authenticator app.

Setting Up 2FA Using SMS Messages

On the Twitter website click More on the main menu.

At this point, the options are exactly the same. We'll show you how to set up 2FA on the Twitter website, but this is the same in the app.

In the Settings section, click Account.

Using an Authentication App for 2FA

Before switching, make sure you've downloaded and signed in an authentication app on your smartphone. We recommend Authy. There are many options available in the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store.

To use an authentication app, log in to Twitter (if you have not already). Then follow the instructions at the top of the page to access your confirmation settings (Account> Security> Login Confirmation).

As with setting up SMS, the process is almost identical, whether you use the Twitter website or the Mobile App.

In the Verification Methods section, click the Mobile Security App option.

If you use the Twitter website

A QR code is displayed. Set up a new account in your authentication app, scan the QR code with your phone, and click Next.

If you use the Twitter app

Click Set Up Now.

The app automatically switches to your authentication app and creates an account. If you have more than one authenticator app installed, you must choose which one to use.

From then on, the process is the same for the website and the mobile app.

Enter the code of your authenticator app and click "Verify". This process confirms that the authentication app has been set up correctly.
