Enabling End-to-End Encryption in Telegram Chats for Private Calls «Smartphones :: Gadget Hacks



Telegram routinely provides secure messages for truly private conversations between two participants. However, standard cloud chats in telegram are encrypted only between client and server, not between client and client. This means that you have to be proactive in ensuring that your private conversations in Telegram are truly private.

Telegram, however, was hard at work trying to improve security around in his app, especially for its cloud chats. Telegram uses a proprietary encryption protocol, MTProto, which has grown significantly from version 1.0 to 2.0 in December 2017. By default, Telegram's regular cloud-based chats are stored on its servers, but a distributed infrastructure is used to split decryption keys into locations, so data is more secure.

Cloud chats are safer than before, but Telegram still has access. The company claims to have "passed 0 bytes of user data to third parties, including governments." However, if you share sensitive information, it is better to use E2E encryption. In client-to-client communication, messages remain only on user devices and not on corporate servers that could potentially be preloaded for information.

Securing Your Chats with End-to-End Encryption

So how can you make sure that this data is not encrypted? Do you use end-to-end encryption in your chats on telegram? Just use the "Secret Chat" feature of Telegram. Using Secret Chat over regular chat has many advantages.

Enabling the Secret Chat on the iPhone

To start a secret chat on an iPhone, tap the New Message icon in the upper-right corner of the Chats tab, then select New Secret Chat. Select the contact with whom you want to initiate the secret chat, and the next screen will show that you have invited him to join. Note that they must be in your contact list to communicate with them in secret chats.

Enabling Secret Chat on Android

To get one To start secret chat on an Android phone, there are two options. For the first path (bottom left GIF), tap on the three-line menu icon in the sidebar and then on "New Secret Chat", followed by the name of the contact. For the second way (right GIF below), tap the new message icon in the lower right corner of the Chats screen, select New Secret Chat, and then the contact's name.

Either way, the next screen will show that you've invited them to join. Note that they must be in your contact list to communicate with them in secret chats.

The Secret Chat Features

In A Secret Chat allows you to send photos, videos, voice messages, stickers, files and even your location. Like normal text they are only visible on user devices and not stored on Telegram's servers. The data is processed on their servers, but Telegram states that "without the keys that [it doesn’t] have, they store random sequences of unimportant symbols [s] and process them," allowing files outside of you or your recipient's phone not decipherable.

You can also initiate a continuous encrypted phone call. However, all phone calls in Telegram use continuous encryption. The call log is displayed outside the secret chat, even if it sounds strange, and it is not marked with a lock like "Secret Chats".

As stated in the bulleted list above, if you want to delete a message In a secret chat, you can only do this for you and the other party. You can do this in regular chats as well, but you also have the option to delete the message yourself.

You can also "delete" a secret chat history to clear all messages on both pages. On an iPhone, on the Chats tab, you would swipe left into the secret chat, select Delete, then Clear History. On Android, you can select the secret chat on the main screen of the telegram, tap the vertical ellipsis, and then tap Delete History. Alternatively, you can tap the vertical ellipsis points in the secret chat and then select "Delete history".

If someone decides to "delete" the entire secret chat, the other party can continue to view all messages. However, iPhone users will receive the "Delete and Stop" notification to prompt them to clean the house, while Android users will receive a "Canceled Chat Secret" notification and be left to manually delete it.

If you have screenshots in Telegram on Android (which is currently only possible in older Android operating systems and telegram versions). When you take a screenshot in a secret chat, a warning message is displayed directly in the secret chat that you and they can see. When you take a screenshot on an iPhone, both you and the other person receive a secret chat notification.

And last but not least, there are a few last things to keep in mind: You can not turn regular chats into secret chats, and you can not downgrade them to chats on cloud chats. In addition, secret chats do not support group messages – only from person to person. It is a challenge to provide group chats with E2E encryption, and Telegram claims that WhatsApp, iMessage and other E2E encrypted group chats are not implemented safely. Until telegram finds a way to keep group chats safe, secret chats are not supported for group discussions.
