Fact check: The Trump campaign runs Facebook ads with a fake picture of Biden wearing an earpiece



Another inaccurate ad is now running in the Trump campaign.

Trump’s allies unsubstantiatedly hinted ahead of Tuesday’s presidential debate that Biden would attempt to use an earphone on stage, presumably to get real-time instructions from advisors.
Biden didn’t wear an earbud, and there’s no evidence he ever wanted to wear one. (There’s a story of false conspiracy theories about debate earbuds.) However, the Trump campaign launched a series of Facebook ads allegedly showing a photo of Biden wearing white Apple-style earbuds in his right ear.

Some of the ads have a white circle around that part of the image, as if they were showing people where to look to see that Biden was caught.

Facts first:: The Trump commercial image of Biden wearing an earphone is not authentic. The earbud has been converted into a real photo showing Biden without the earbuds.

In fact, the Trump campaign also shows some anti-Biden ads that use the same Biden photo without the earbud worked in.

Trump campaign communications director Tim Murtaugh said in an email Thursday that the earbud ads were an “overt satire”

There is no evidence that this happened. Regardless, it is by no means obvious that the ads are meant to be satirical. Some of the ads say things like “Joe’s PLEASE pause during the debate! CHECK JOE’S EARS! He refused a drug test and refused an earpiece inspection!” Others say, “WHO’S IN JOE’S EAR?”

And Trump and his campaign have put in a serious effort for months to convince the public that Biden’s wit is not up to the job. You have repeatedly pointed out unfoundedly that Biden is unable to speak coherently without the help of a teleprompter or even drugs.

According to statistics from Facebook’s publicly accessible ad database, the earphone ads, some of which were still active on Friday three days after the debate, were seen together a million times. In fact, Facebook doesn’t review politicians’ ads.

It’s not clear whether the Trump campaign did its own Photoshop job or took the altered image from someone else.
