Galaxy Fold Relaunch: Everything we know about Samsung's foldable phone

  Samsung Galaxy Fold 27

Angela Lang / CNET

Samsung will get a second chance with the Galaxy Fold a phone that was put on hold three months ago after caused problems with the Fold plastic screen had re-rating the original sales date of Aril 26 . Now comes the world's most popular foldable phone in September. Although CNET's review unit never broke through (here's our Galaxy Fold Review ), we're curious to see if the fold redesign underpins the vulnerabilities of the phone.

We Now Know What the key design changes are how Samsung keeps people from peeling off a protective layer that caused the screen to malfunction and when the phone is selling. Continue reading for what we know and do not know, and a summary of what went wrong. We will update this with more details as we learn it.

When will the fold actually be traded in September?

Samsung has not yet announced a (re) launch date, but will do so "in the coming weeks".

Will we be able to see what the "repaired" fold looks like?

Yes, and no. Samsung has shared some renderings of the new Fold design, but it's pretty hard to tell what has changed in size and angles.

What has changed ?

This from Samsung:

  • The upper protective layer of the Infinity Flex display has been extended beyond the bezel, making it clear that it is an integral part of the display's display structure and not intended for removal.
  • Galaxy Fold has added reinforcements to better protect the device from external particles while retaining the folding characteristic characteristic of the hinge:
  • The top and bottom of the hinge area were reinforced with new protection caps.
    • Additional metal layers under the Infinity Flex display have been added to enhance the protection of the display.
    • The distance between the hinge and the case of the Galaxy Fold has been reduced.

How are people supposed to know that? Remove screen protection layer?

This will be communicated to Samsung in the phone's quick guide, on the screen that surrounds the phone in its packaging, and on the Samsung website.

Will Samsung open the CD / DVD Count on the galaxy fold when the delay is there?

Narp. Samsung will keep the price as planned at $ 1

,980 and sell it in selected countries.

When will the pre-orders start again?

Good question. This is another set of details that Samsung does not yet share. What we do know is that Best Buy, Samsung and AT & T all canceled their fold pre-orders which means that interested fold owners would have to pre-order again. The technology giant will not charge credit cards until the Galaxy Fold is shipped. T-Mobile has never pre-ordered the fold.

Comment : The noise of foldable phones does not work. Just ask Samsung and Huawei

Will AT & T and T-Mobile still sell the fold?

That's unclear. Although both US airlines originally opted for the unit, T-Mobile is reported to be withdrawing . We contacted T-Mobile and AT & T for details.

How did the delay affect Samsung's reputation?

Samsung's delay in Galaxy Fold has put Samsung in a difficult position. As the largest phone manufacturer in the world and the first major brand to announce a foldable phone, Samsung's reputation as an innovator is on the rise, especially after its spectacular revelation on February 20.

Samsung's problems underscore how risky and fragile the concept of a foldable phone really is. Foldable phones represent a new type of device designed to maximize screen size without increasing the overall size of the device. The technology giant wanted to play a pioneering role and strengthen its reputation as an innovator in the transition to the next big company.

Until Samsung and other brands can dispel the fears of shoppers with screens that can withstand the pressures of daily use, the future of foldable phones is precariously in balance. Intense criticism can affect future sales and shake consumer confidence in the concept of folding phones in general.

The Galaxy Fold's ability to lead the up-and-coming category could be called into question when buyers turn their backs on innovative design – this could still happen – or for a competing model like Huawei Mate X decide. , TCL's upcoming designs or a rumored foldable phone such as the Motorola Razr . On the other hand, these other companies have the chance to learn from the mistakes of Galaxy Fold .

Why was the Galaxy Fold display damaged at all?

Several early reviewers have found damage to the screens on their Galaxy Fold loaner machines, which rendered the foldable phones unusable. The photos of the damaged wrinkles ranged from a completely darkened screen to a bubbling device, with one part of the screen white and the other half darkened.

The Fold has a horizontal clamshell design with hard glass halves closing like a book to protect a delicate 7.3-inch plastic display inside. Samsung even has a case in the Galaxy Fold Box as additional armor for the glass exterior, in case you drop the phone.

There may be a reason that some of the phones have been damaged. Two reviewers had a total screen failure as they removed a thin plastic wrap on the screen of the Galaxy Fold. There is a small gap between this film and the edge of the display, which has led to ambiguity about the nature of the film.

Samsung Galaxy Fold issues explained

It is not immediately apparent if the plastic layer is part of the phone or if it is the film you normally see on devices to keep screens free from dirt and lint during shipment and storage.

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman found out the hard way that the latter was not the case. He tweeted about his tester last week: "The screen of my Galaxy Fold tester is completely broken and unusable in just two days – hard to know if it's common or not."

YouTube reviewer Marques "MKBHD" Brownlee had a similar experience after subtracting the shift from his Galaxy Fold review section.

he tweeted . "It's NOT a screen protector – DO NOT remove it."

But the protective film is not the only cause for Samsung's early problems. CNBC's Todd Haselton flickered on the left side of his review sample. Dieter Bohn von der Verge also had problems with Bohn's screen, which formed a bulge below the surface. Also on Tuesday, YouTube reviewer Michael "Mr. Mobile" Fisher found a bump under his Galaxy Fold screen.

These reports of a flawed Galaxy Fold are a nightmare for Samsung, the first major brand to have a foldable phone sold. The Fold – which has a 4.6-inch screen on the outside, a bendable 7.3-inch screen on the inside, and a price tag of nearly $ 2,000 – is a big risk for the technology giant.

Do I have to worry? [19659006] While the reported issues make the affected Galaxy Fold unusable, unlike the unfortunate Galaxy Note 7 which overheats and sometimes burns, it's not dangerous.

What does this fold incident mean for Google Android support?

Google's support for the category of foldable phones is unshakeable. Stephanie Saad Cuthbertson, Google's senior Android director, said at its annual Google I / O Conference on May 7 that foldable phones "are opening a whole new category, even though it's still in its infancy that could change the future of mobile computing. People try the Galaxy Fold for the first time

Android Q, the upcoming update to Google's mobile operating system, focuses on App Continuity, the software that allows cell phones like the Galaxy Fold to quickly move an active app from one screen to another and, for example, from one small screen to another Align outside on a larger screen on the inside and back again without missing a punch. Because developers typically do not create apps for foldable screens, standardized developer tools and best practices help these apps work better on foldable screens.

Google's ongoing role here suggests that the problems of folding are more of a pothole than a roadblock on the way to folding telephone designs.

What is this film layer on everyone's lips?

Let's first turn to the film layer. I received my test device on Monday morning, then shot an unboxing video and feared I'd forgotten to remove that plastic layer – what would the YouTube viewers say ?!

As it turns out, a sheer plastic wrap covering the foldable phone's 7.3-inch display is a protective layer that helps protect the phone from damage.

You can see the edges of this layer here on my review sample:

  Galaxy fold-screen movie "data-original =" https://cnet4.cbsistatic.com/img/e6ysdqHyAHNeQ6qDg5xRwOEkO9g=/2019/04/ 18 / 00727fc0-f355-4872-a7df-1a97b98c3254 / galaxy-fold-screen-film.jpg [19659075malegalaxy-fold-screen-film[19659025mallymaybecauseofthesightandyoucanaathinlineincludingthescreenjustbeholdingthebezelthisisthelayerofprotectiontheSamsungwouldliketocapture</p>

Okay, now it's clear: Whatever you do, do not pull that movie back. It's part of the screen and bad things happen when you remove it.

But even here the protective layer is not the whole story, as two other reviewers, Haselton and Bohn, said they did not remove the film and still had problems rendering the crease unusable. So what's up?

What's up with the screen of the Galaxy Fold?

The Galaxy Fold has a completely different screen setup than any other phone. There's a 4.6-inch display on the outside that's covered with Gorilla Glass – that's the same as other Galaxy phones like the S10 and S10 Plus ($ 783 at Walmart) . Inside, however, the screen is made of a plastic (polymer) that Samsung calls the Infinity Flex Display.

Samsung created this with a new process and special adhesives that can withstand the bending and bending of the screen without breaking. The screen protector should stay in place to prevent damage to the underlying display – this is what actually makes your "display" light up. Without the hardness of the glass that covers the sensitive display, the fold is more vulnerable, which is clearly noticeable.

What it's like to watch Netflix on the Galaxy Fold

Angela Lang / CNET

Is there anything else on the test phones?

Yes. Appraisers received early production models. This means that these are not the final verification units and may be vulnerable to certain issues that Samsung may be able to resolve before the Fold gets into the hands of the buyers.

For example, I've been told that my review sample is an unlocked European version that does not support US services like Bixby Voice, Samsung Health and Samsung Pay. Likewise, I was warned that call quality might be compromised as the phone is not optimized for US tapes.

While fully testing this Galaxy Fold reviewer, I refuse to accept a review until I receive the final CNET series model ordered.

Did Samsung say you should not remove the movie?

It is not clear whether Samsung has thoroughly informed every reviewer who received a phone about the screen protector. There was no instruction in my box – no literature at all – but no other clue, like a pull tab, that you should remove it.

I almost did it anyway. As a reviewer I want to experience the phone as "clean" as possible. That is, everything that I can peel off will come off. I emailed Samsung on Tuesday to get more information about this shift. A spokesperson said, "Galaxy Fold has a special protective coating, it's not a screen protector, so do not try to remove it."

The Company Further Clarified Its Position:

"Some Reviewers Claimed to Have Removed the Top The Galaxy Fold's main display has one top protective layer, which is part of the display structure to protect the display from accidental scratches Removing the protective layer or adding adhesives to the main display We will ensure that this information is clearly provided to our customers. "

Samsung added this statement Also added:

"The protective coating is part of the display structure designed to protect the screen from accidental scratches." The Galaxy Fold's main display is equipped with a new, advanced polymer layer and adhesive The display is flexible and durable enough to handle repeated folds Since the main display is made of polymer, is the additional protective layer is built into the display to protect it from impact, so it should not be removed by force. Note that the protective layer is not integrated in the display. Contact Samsung Customer Service at 1-800-SAMSUNG as soon as possible to prevent further damage to the display.

Desmond Smith, Director of Creative Content and Tech Evangelist at T-Mobile, [tweeted that the carrier's final series models carry a warning on the packaging over the Galaxy Fold's screen: [19659059]] But removing the screen layer of the fold is not the only problem

While removing the plastic wrap was a problem for some, it is not clear what the protective foil will do or how the removal will affect the screen's behavior Bohn and Fisher suspect that a piece of dust or dirt has accumulated under the screen to create the bulge he felt and a slight distortion on the surface of the fold.

Meanwhile, Haselton noticed a continued flicker of the screen on the left side of the screen, and we know that two batteries, one on each side, work together to form a single source of energy. I'm not an electrical or chemical engineer, but I'm wondering if this might indicate a battery problem. Hopefully we will all find out one way or the other.

In any case, the risky design of the Galaxy Fold has caused some inconsistencies that could damage its early production phones and reputation.

Why are bendable screens made of plastic at all?

At the moment, glass does not bend so well. This is what Corning – the manufacturer of Gorilla Glass, which covers most high-end phones – is working on . However, do not expect bending glass to save second-generation foldable phones. It will not be ready for some time glass that forms into a foldable cover …
