Georgia officials on leave after shooting a vehicle carrying a minor

Two Georgia police officers were on leave after an incident Saturday morning in which they fired at five minors while a vehicle was stopped.

According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Waycross, Georgia police attempted to obtain license plate information for a car around 8 a.m. after a traffic violation. Five minors aged 9, 12, 14, 15 and 16 were in the car.

After three of the children had left the car as it continued to move towards the officers, they fired “several times” at the car, according to the GBI, with the 15- and 16-year-olds still inside. Police arrested both the 16-year-old and the 15-year-old for possession of a gun by someone under the age of 1

8.

The 16-year-old was also charged with reckless driving, a stop sign violation, a serious assault on a police officer and his driver’s license. Police accused the 15-year-old of obstructing an officer and removing an officer or attempting to remove a firearm.

The three younger children said they were on their way back from Walmart when the officer was chasing them and didn’t turn on the lights until they were in their neighborhood, Dominique Goodman Sr., the minors’ father, told CNN -Daughter WJXT.

The 12-year-old said the two older teenagers told the other to get out of the car and run home to alert their father. At that point, the officers started shooting.

“They shot a car full of unarmed minors. A car full of unarmed children. Who in the world can’t see this is a 9 year old? Who can not see this is a child? They look like children” Goodman told WJXT. “They’re babies. What was the purpose of the shooting?”

He told the partner that they were on their way to pick him up before going to a football tournament in Jacksonville where two of them were supposed to play.

“This is a good neighborhood. All neighbors are basically relatives. To hear gunshots in this neighborhood and see our children being shot at, everyone in the neighborhood knows our children. They know they are not bad children. ” Goodman told WJXT. “Our kids almost lose their lives to go to a soccer game? Man, this is crazy. This is insane. They almost lost their lives going to a soccer game.”
