The idea of augmented reality is not new, but the world of smartphones wants to make a big difference. As with any platform, both product demand and technological advances need to catch up with the industry before it becomes a viable solution for daily consumer life. Apple and Google are working to introduce the smart phone consumer to AR for the first time with the basic features.
Google's AR Stickers (now Google Playground) have recently undergone a redesign to allow much more interaction between their AR characters, which adds some new unique experiences to the mix. The new Google Playground feature only works officially with Pixel smartphones, but I'll show you how to get your ARCore supported phone right now ̵
Step 1: Make sure your device supports ARCore
At the moment, this mod works only with devices that officially support the ARCore platform (outside of Google's pixel series of smartphones, that come with this software). There's a good chance that you have one or know someone who does that, because almost all popular devices now support the platform.
Popular ARCore-Supported Devices
- Google: From the Nexus 5X all the way to the Pixel 3 XL.
- LG: From G6 to G7 and from V30 to V40.
- Motorola: Moto G5S Plus, Moto G6, Moto Z2 to Z3.
- OnePlus: From the OnePlus 3T to the OnePlus 6T
- Samsung: Galaxy S7 by Galaxy S9; Galaxy Note 8 and Note 9.
Step 2: Download the ARCore Platform
After you determine that your device has ARCore compatibility, you must download the ARCore platform from the Play Store if You have not already done this.
Now that the ARCore platform is installed, you need to download the modified Google Playground app that lets you download the awesome Avengers AR stickers to your device. The file is 467 MB in size, so downloading may take several minutes. It includes all the latest AR stickers and features, just as you would get from Google Pixel devices.
Now the modified app has been downloaded to your device. You must install the file like any other app. If you downloaded the file from a web browser using the phone, tap the notification when the download is complete. If necessary, grant access to the system to install apps that are not directly from the Google Play Store. If you want to install it later, you can alternatively browse and reinstall the desired File Manager app. When the app installation is complete, you can not use it yet. Just touch Done.
Now you have the ARCore platform and Google downloaded Playground modified app. The final step is to install the modified Google Camera app. The Camera app is the place where you can use and interact with the AR stickers. This is another important aspect for the whole thing to work. Browse the list and find a modified camera app that matches your ARCore-compatible device.
After the camera mod has been downloaded, you can install it just as you did with the Google Playground app from the previous step. When it's done, tap "Open" to begin the next step in using the AR stickers. You can always return to the camera like any other app from the app drawer of your Home Launcher.
Now scroll through the list on the Camera app To find the "More" section, tap the "Playground" icon. You will be taken to a new screen where you can interact with the AR stickers and create some exciting scenes. When you tap the smiley sticker icon with the blue notification point, your list of stickers that you can use will be displayed.
We wanted to try the Avengers sticker package. Take a look at the "Featured" section and scroll down a bit to see 5 stickers to choose from. Since this is a mod, most things are called a "missing name". Tap one of the characters to put them in the AR field – add more characters to the scene and then see what happens!
You can experiment with different poses, combinations of characters, and even your own on-screen text. This is a fun introduction to what AR is and what it can do, but watch out for more advanced AR features in the future.
Note: You'll find that your device needs slightly less battery and slightly more heat while using AR apps for a longer period of time. AR requires a lot of energy to function properly, so for the time being it is completely normal until battery and other technologies continue to advance in the future.
