While we have called the Apple Watch Series 5 the "best lifestyle assistant and best wearable fitness machine," that does not mean it's the model you should have. Whether you're shopping for yourself or someone else and on a tight budget, the Series 4 offers the most features the Series 5 offers, up to $ 300 less than the newer comparable models.
If you compare the basic features side-by-side, the Apple Watch Series 4 and Series 5 are almost identical. Same display and case size, resolution, touch screen, Bluetooth, WiFi, NFC, LTE, water resistance, battery life and band styles. Although the Series 5 has an S5 processor, the CPU and GPU are identical to those of the Series 4 S4 processor. They also have most of the same sensors and both support watchOS 6.
The Series 5 has just a compass, a constantly-on display, an international distress call, more memory and more body surfaces. But for many it's not worth the extra cost if the Series 4 models are solid enough without these things. And these features may not even be needed, depending on who will use them.
The best deals for Apple Watch Series 4
The Series 5 compass is the best innovation in our opinion. Aside from the normal north magnetic direction, you can change it to true north if necessary. In addition, the compass works with and without wireless or cellular connection. This is great if you are an avid hiker or nature lover, but if you spend most of your time in the city relying on Apple Maps, do you really need a compass? Probably not. Especially if you already have an iPhone in your pocket that also has a compass.
t is a constantly on display. It always shows the time on the screen as well as everything else on your dial and can display the latest app instead. Everything without lifting the wrist or tapping the screen. It also has a variable refresh rate, so the refresh rate changes from 60 Hz (brighter) to 1
However, there are problems with the display always on. First, it is not technically "always on". There are no seconds hands for low powered analog clocks, as the time is updated only once per minute . And many of the complications that appear on the dial are not up to date in Always-on mode, as they only update every 60 seconds – or longer. Therefore, it can be a bit confusing to see other information on the screen when waking up than in sleep mode. Second, not all complications on the dial actually display useful information when in the low-power state. Many of the processes are hidden, and some do not work at all. For example, Compass and Noise apps are not even active in Always On mode.
Third, there is a battery life. Yes, the refresh rate helps, but some people have actually reported that the battery is discharged faster than the 4 Series. The only way to fix battery drain is to completely turn off Always On mode.
The permanent display can be of great use to users who ride a lot of bicycles and perform other activities where they can not always move their wrists up to indicate the time of day. But is that you? Or the person you shop for? If you are not sure, why save money on a series 5?
Do you need an international emergency call?
With the Apple Watch Series 4, you can easily reach emergency service (911) in the US for a long time. Pressing the power button will expand Series 5 so that you can contact local Rescue Services overseas. That way, you're always quick to help when you need it.
However, if you or the person you're shopping for rarely travel outside the US – or never do – it's a useless upgrade. The series 4 wins here too. If you do not intend to purchase a GPS + Cellular model, which normally costs $ 100 more than the GPS version, the emergency international call feature will not even work.
Do you need more storage space? All Apple Watch Series 4 models have 16GB of storage, while all Series 5 models have 32GB. Is this extra space really needed? Not if you want to store tons of music and photos on the clock.
You can only sync a photo album to the Apple Watch. If it's a big album, it takes up a lot of space. However, if you do not want to display photos on a tiny screen, you do not need an extra 16GB of storage.
If photos do not consume memory, this is music. And if you do not want a lot of playlists stored on your watch to run or workout in the gym or hike or whatever, the 16GB Series 4 models are more than enough to your favorite music and music to process the most commonly heard music.
Apart from the above features, the last major criterion is the actual case of the watch. They all have the same color options for the aluminum and stainless steel bodies. The only major change is that the Series 5 aluminum body is made of 100% recycled 7000 series aluminum. Does it matter? Probably not for most people.
However, Series 5 offers options for titanium and ceramic bodies, while Series 4 does not. But if you're in the market for the best Apple Watch that you can buy for your money on a tight budget, these case materials are a joke, bringing you back $ 400 to $ 1,000.
Now that you know that there are really only five key factors that differentiate the Apple Watch Series 5 from the Series 4, is this sufficient to justify the extra cost? Probably not. Sure, the initial EIA after each release is the same, but now that Apple is not even selling more Series 4 models, you get a pretty good discount elsewhere. Even better, if you think of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, where older models usually get the best deals over newer ones.
