With Android 10 and iOS 13 you can now apply a system-wide, dark theme to Google's and Apple's mobile operating systems. However, dark mode is not automatically applied everywhere, and some popular apps, including Gmail, did not have a dark mode setting when shipped from Android 1

Dark mode is increasingly in demand. Before Apple and Google dealt with it, the popularity of dark modes for apps, such as Facebook Messenger and the Slack and Reddit apps grew.

Dark mode saves you a little battery life, and your phone's screen will spare your eyes at night. Google added Dark Mode to an Android Pie Update for the first time this year, but the topic was not shown everywhere. In Android 10, dark mode is much more common, and apps that use the default system design automatically inherit the new dark mode when you turn it on, which inverts dark and light colors. While many Android apps from Google accept a dark theme when you enable it in the general settings, you can enable it separately in Gmail.

. 1 Tap the Hamburger menu in the top left corner of the Gmail app on your phone.

. 2 Scroll to the bottom of the list and tap Settings .

. 3 Tap General Settings .

. 4 Tap Theme at the top of the list.

. 5 Tap Dark, or, if you have already set the dark theme as the system default, on System Standard .

The following apps, which automatically inherit the default system, turn on the dark theme.

. 1 In Settings, tap Display .

. 2 Enable Dark Theme at the bottom of the list of settings.
