Active Noise Canceling (ANC) headphones are often expensive. Cost in the hundreds of dollars. TaoTronics claims it can deliver good noise canceling and great sound for less than $ 100. Will that succeed? Surprisingly yes!
Here's what we like
- Good work on noise cancellation
- Music sounds good
- Great low battery
And what we do not
- Slightly uncomfortable Easy to keep ANC on and turn off battery
- Headphones do not work
If you are unfamiliar with Active Noise Canceling, the basic requirement is simple. ANC headphones use microphones to monitor for ambient noise. When this nose is detected, the headset will make an opposite sound to suppress it. If you think of the sound as +1, the counter-noise is -1.
The most expensive and accurate way to achieve this effect is to use Hybrid ANC, which uses microphones inside and outside the headphones. Normally you will find Hybrid ANC on expensive headphones, such as: Sony's ANC headphones, which are often available for $ 300.
Taotronics offers the same technology for less than $ 90, and overall delivers a boring, albeit maintenance-friendly look.

You do not look like much. But hey, they are headphones. Josh Hendrickson
Let's face it. If you buy your headphones as a status symbol, you will never consider TaoTronics. Apart from the fact that this is not a well-known high-end brand, the appearance of these ANC headphones is boring at best.
The headphones are black with some silver and chrome accents and some buttons. You will not find smart LEDs, controls, or other things that scream expensive headphones. Honestly, that's okay. Not everything has to be cleaned.
On the right auricle you will find all the controls you need. At first, the placement of the buttons annoyed me. The Noise Cancellation switch is located far from the power and volume buttons.
After wearing headphones for a while, the placement clicked. When I raise my hand to my right ear, of course my thumb lies on the volume and volume buttons. And my ring finger presses on the noise canceling switch. Now I have no problems.
My main complaint with the physical aspect of the headphones is the fit. The ear cups are nice and have lots of pillows, but the band was a problem at first. It does not wrap my head like most of my headphones, instead pressing against my head at the top of the tape.
At first this pressure caused discomfort, but eventually I got used to it. It does not bother me any more while I'm wearing the headphones, but when I pick them up I'm suddenly aware of the pain I ignored. I have a little head; You may feel more comfortable than me.
Noise cancellation works, and you also get good sound quality.
Meanwhile, you're probably wondering if the noise suppression actually works. I like to say yes. I do not have ANC headphones worth $ 200 to $ 400 for comparison, but I'm happy with the performance of these headphones.
If you're on the road or even sitting on the side of the road, you just turn the ANC switch to cuts About 90% of the noise I've heard from cars. In my office, the headphones have silenced my running fan almost completely. And although I have not been on a plane lately, I was surprised at how little I could hear when I loaded a YouTube video onto my surround system and aired engine noise. I just turned off the ANC switch to see if my speakers are not the problem, and immediately regretted it.
These successful results were improved when I turned on music. These headphones are Bluetooth (4.2) capable and compatible with a standard headphone jack so you can enjoy music on almost any device as you like.
I thought it was good that I did not have to listen to music to drown out the world around me. Remember that ANC only blocks certain types of sounds. I still could understand people who were talking and you will always hear a crying baby in an airplane.
How do the Taotronics headphones sound? Like a decent set of $ 90 headphones. I was happy with the bass and the mix; It's a pretty neutral sound. Unfortunately, they do not have equalizer options that you can use to adjust. So you hear what you get. For $ 90 for a range of cans containing ANC, there's nothing here that could be disappointing.
The battery life and the extras complete the picture.
The true stars of these headphones are battery life and charging times. The company claims that a full charge gives you 30 hours of run time, and this seems to be about right in my tests – assuming ANC is off. When I turned on ANC, I had a useful life of about 15 hours.
If you need more time, you can get it quickly. With only five minutes of charging time, you have 2 hours of playing time. You will be fully charged in 45 minutes. Do not forget to switch off the ANC switch, otherwise the battery will be discharged.
Taotronics contained a bag, and just like the headphones, it is boring and yet maintenance-free. It is a plain black plastic with a touch of texture and a thin black cloth surrounds the inside. Since the headphones can not be folded, the case is relatively large: My Kindle fits into the case with plenty of space to borrow.
In addition to the Bluetooth feature, you also get a headphone cable and an aircraft adapter. The cord is short for my taste and never quite straight. However, if you have a 3.5mm to 3.5mm cable (this is a headphone jack on both ends), you can always use your own.
If you are in the market for a set of ANC headphones and Sony offers and Bose are too rich for your blood, you should look at the ANC headphones from TaoTronics. You get a lot for a lot less, and that sounds good to me.
