Google has now officially decoupledfrom and the two Google storage services no longer keep their photos in sync automatically. This means that photos you upload to one service and changes you make to them will no longer be reliably displayed elsewhere.
Google made the change because some people found the relationship confusing. However, if you'd like your photos to sync, we've come up with a workaround to keep Google Drive and Google Photos up to date. Google also has a tool that lets you sync both apps.
The Google backup and sync application
The Google backup and sync application for Windows or Mac backs up photos from your computer, camera, or SD card to Google Drive and Photos and loads a copy high for you into both Google services. How to set it up.
. 1 If you have not already done so, download Backup and Sync to your PC or Mac.
. 2 Follow the instructions to install and log in.
. 3 When prompted, grant the app permission to access your photos.
. 4 The app installs a folder called Google Drive on your computer. You can drag photos and documents into the folder to sync content with Google Drive on Google's servers.
. 5 To sync other folders on your computer with Drive, open the Backup and Sync settings and select the folders that you want to sync, such as: Eg documents or pictures.
Copying photos from Google Drive to Google Photos
Another option is to move photos and videos from Drive to Photos using the new Google Photos upload tool. However, the tool does not synchronize these duplicate files. Changes you make in one place do not affect the copy elsewhere.
Note: If you save your photos with the Original Full Resolution setting, these duplicate files do not count toward your drive's storage capacity twice, as they do now, just twice. And you need to use Google Photos on your Mac or PC.
. 1 In the top right corner of Google Photos, tap Upload.
. 2 To copy photos from Drive, tap Google Drive on the menu.
. 3 Select the image or images you want to copy from the drive, and then tap Upload at the bottom right of the window.
You receive a message stating that your selection is being uploaded to Photos.
How to sync your photos with Google Drive using Google Photos
You can also verify that your Google Photos app is syncing with your Google Photos library on Google's servers.
. 1 In the Google Photos app, tap the Hamburger menu, then tap Settings.
. 2 Tap Backup and Sync to see if you have the option enabled and back up to the correct account.
. 3 While you're in device folders here, you can set up other folders on your phone to sync with your Google Photos library.
