As of July 10, Google decouplesfrom and the two storage services automatically sync the photos of each other. This means that photos you have uploaded in one place will not be reliably displayed in the other. The same applies to changes you make to a photo in a service. According to Google, that has changed as some people found the relationship confusing. However, it's bad news if you're used to finding all of your photos in Google Photos and Google Drive, which are automatically synced in both services.
We've discovered a workaround that can help keep Google Drive and Google Photos in sync. In addition, Google will release a tool in July that will help you sync both apps.
The Google backup and sync application
The Google backup and sync application for Windows or Mac backs up photos from your computer, camera, or SD card to Google Drive and Photos and loads a copy high for you into both Google services. How to set it up.
. 1 If you have not already done so, download Backup and Sync to your PC or Mac.
. 2 Follow the instructions to install and then log in.
. 3 When prompted, grant the app permission to access your photos.
. 4 The app installs a folder called Google Drive on your computer. You can drag photos and documents into the folder to sync content with Google Drive on Google's servers.
. 5 To sync other folders on your computer with Drive, open the Backup and Sync settings and select the folders that you want to sync, such as: Eg documents or pictures.
How to sync photos from Google Drive with Google Photos
Another option is to move photos and videos from Drive to Photos. Google announces that a tool called "Share with Me" will be released, with which your photos can be transferred in July.
However, the new Google tool does not sync these duplicate files so changes you make in one place will not be visible elsewhere.
And note: If you save your photos with the Original full resolution setting, these duplicate files will be counted twice the storage capacity of your drive, rather than just once.
To sync your photos with the Google Photos app with Google Drive
You can also verify that your Google Photos app syncs with your Google Photos library on Google's servers.
. 1 In the Google Photos app, tap the Hamburger menu, then tap Settings.
. 2 Tap Backup and Sync to see if you've switched to Backup and Sync and back up to the correct account.
. 3 While you're in device folders here, you can set up other folders on your phone to sync with your Google Photos library.
