Here are some do's and don'ts

A photo of several cameras from mobile phones.

Many of us techies go on smartphones as if they were disposable. It's hard to resist the urge to decouple, pet and power on a new handset for the first time – especially if it has some fancy new features!

Life is not cheap. It's a good idea to think about selling your old phone to make up for some of the cost, rather than doing a complete upgrade from scratch each time.

This makes it easier to finance the next phone, and it will make another gadget enthusiast happily created. It makes no sense to hoard just a few expensive cell phones. It is better to pass it on to someone who will continue to use it.

We've all heard a lot of scary stories, so we want to provide you with all the tools you need to make these transactions as smooth as possible. With the tips below, you are well-prepared for the used gadgets market, mainly for selling cell phones. Most steps should also apply to tablets, gadgets and even non-tech products. Dive in!

Be Detailed and Honest

Two types of buyers: those who know what they are looking for, and those who browse to see what she could convince. Regardless of which customer you sell to, it always helps to be as detailed as possible. Do not lie about the condition or capabilities of your product – be honest! These person-to-person transactions require trust. If I ever find a salesman lying about something, insignificant as it may be, I will not go any further. It probably means that they will also lie about more important issues.

Is the smartphone very worn or have you kept it in a case since the first day? Make sure to tell people about your situation and inform them when problems occur. Search for scratches and tell them what you found. Believe it or not, I think you have a better chance of selling the phone, even if it has more damage. If people have a realistic expectation at the first sight of the device, they will not be disappointed. If you find scratches or cracks that you did not mention, they'll just feel cheated.

It may take a bit of work, but most shoppers do not keep up to date with the latest technical information. You may not have any idea what your phone can do for you. Therefore, it may be helpful to get some information about the coolest features.

I also think it's cool when sellers actually list the general phone information. In a way, you have to think about how to do a mini-review. You can look up our review of your phone and link it to it!

Update? Are you looking for something new? Does not like it anymore? Is it a problem with the handset?

Edgar Cervantes

People also like to know why you sell your smartphone. Are you updating? Are you looking for something new? Does not like it anymore?

Time is money!

The longer you wait, the more value your phone will spin down the drain.

Edgar Cervantes

Remember, the smartphone market is moving amazingly fast these days. Most flagship smartphones are considered old in just a few months, so be quick on sale. Put the baby online now! The longer you wait, the more value your phone will flow down the drain.

Try to sell the phone before the newer generation of your smartphone is released. People love to hear that the phone they buy is the "newest flagship" from a manufacturer.

When there are announcements or strong rumors that I want to see a phone, I sell my main unit and use my spare phone for a while. This ensures that my older phone is sold faster and at a better price. Then I just wait until the newer phone is actually released and upgraded.

Points of Sale

] Now that you know the basics of Internet sales, is It's time to put the phone online. Here are our favorite platforms for selling phones!

Gazelle is probably the safest way to sell phones. It probably also offers the lowest prices. You can sell the phone yourself much more, but Gazelle guarantees money without risk. Just tell them from your phone, get a quote, send it to them and wait for the spell to happen. If all goes well, you will receive your payment in the form of a check, an Amazon Gift Card or PayPal. Simple, right?

Go to your dealer or manufacturer to load!

Very often, your own wireless service provider or smartphone manufacturer offers a trade-in value for your old cell phones. As with Gazelle, these are not always the best deals. They are mostly for people who value their time more than their money, but still need something for older devices.

Swappa is my favorite place to sell cell phones. You can usually get more money for your technology if you use Swappa's proven method for the phone trade. These guys will check every single list and make sure nothing is lazy. If the buyer reports something suspicious, PayPal will ensure that you are protected.

People will definitely pay more for this peace of mind. I know I would! But do not be trusted by everyone, no matter how secure a website is. Our own Andrew Grush had to deal with Swappa and Paypal for months to get a refund for a phone that never arrived. In short, Swappa has its back, but solving problems can sometimes take some time.

eBay continues to sell phones. It has one of the largest audiences in the world, which makes your opportunities almost arbitrary. PayPal and eBay even help you to recover your money in case something goes wrong. That's why people tend to trust in it.

The only downside is the competition. You would literally compete with the whole world, so the chances of having to sell your phone for less are higher.

Craigslist is a bit riskier, but one of the most popular sales and trading networks around. It's almost all over the world and promotes local offerings. Since everything is done personally, it is easy to check yourself if everything is alright.

Make sure that nothing is dodgy and the buyer seems legitimate. Do not listen to the Nigerian princes trying to send the phone to distant lands – they want to tear you down!

Some say there is nothing like face to face, and Craigslist is about it.

Social networks, word of mouth, and much more

You'll be surprised how many of your friends are after looking for a phone that is exactly what you are selling. I always write a Facebook post or tell friends and family members the gadget I want to get rid of just in case they value it. Usually I sell it cheaper for them just because they get that special discount, but at least I know I'm dealing with someone I trust. Every social network works, but Facebook is the way to go.

Do you meet in person? It is dangerous out there!

Craigslist and other similar sales arguments are like the Wild West of the Internet. You do not know which buyers you might encounter. Here are some things to look out for.

Craigslist and other similar sales arguments are like the Wild West of the Internet.

Edgar Cervantes

I will never invite a stranger into my house unless I am selling something that is too big for me. I always meet them in a very public place like a restaurant or cafe. Better yet, sometimes I ask her to meet me at the carrier store. This gives both the buyer and the seller rest. There they can check if the phone has been blacklisted and activate it immediately. And dodgy people will not go to an official store to play dirty games, right?

Remember that the customer asks all the questions he wants. You're buying a product that's probably worth hundreds of dollars, and of course you want to know all about it. Just be there for questions and concerns. Try to be friendly and give them a contact number "just in case a problem occurs". Sometimes I tell people that I will help them to claim the guarantee when they need it. I never had to do it, but when you make yourself available, people feel safer buying.

How much do you want for your phone?

Finding out how much your phone is worth is one of the most important parts of the sale. There are plenty of factors, and unfortunately there is rarely a direct answer. Much of it depends on supply and demand. Swappa and eBay usually recommend a reasonable price, which is very helpful, but on other platforms like Craigslist this is not the case.

My first step in determining a fair price is to check how much the phone costs new. I usually check out the shipping company, Amazon and other popular retailers who have the same version. Then I check how much it is normally needed. Craigslist and eBay are well suited for that. Then it's just about comparing your phone with others and taking into account the current status of your device.

You will probably find buyers who are trying to lower the price.

Edgar Cervantes

Oh, and try to come up with a reserve price. You will probably find people trying to lower the price. I meet these buyers almost every time. Hold onto your weapons and do not give in after a certain point. They can be flexible, but they also do not want to be flogged.

It's important to take your time. Watch out for shady people. Stay honest and always think about the well-being of your customer and yourself. If you keep these things in mind, we can almost guarantee that you will end up having a positive experience. But there is a small chance that, despite all these precautions, something is still going wrong. If you prefer a safer route, you can change your phone to a carrier or use something like swappa or gazelle.

We hope this will help you more enjoyable smartphone sales experience, and please make the comments with all your thoughts!
