Here’s how to wirelessly control your Android TV with your phone

The picture shows the Android TV remote control app on a smartphone in front of an Android TV

Most Android TVs come with a voice remote control to make it easier to find content with the Google Assistant. However, there are many instances when you may not want to use a remote control and find it more convenient to use your smartphone to control your Android TV instead. For example, typing on an Android TV is much easier with a phone than with the remote control. A phone can also help you navigate and use your Android TV if the remote control stops working properly.

The Android TV remote control app is the easiest way to control your Android TV device with a smartphone. The app is available for both iOS and Android phones. It’s free and works with Android TVs, set-top boxes, streaming sticks, and other devices.

  • Open the Android TV remote control app on your phone.
  • Tap the name of your Android TV.

Once you have successfully connected your phone to the Android TV using the Android TV remote control app, a D-pad surface will appear. You can use the up / down / left / right arrows to navigate your Android TV screen. You also have the option of using a touchpad instead of a D-pad. To do this, select the touchpad controls from the hamburger menu in the top left corner of your screen. The image below gives you a good idea of how the app looks and works.
