Hiding WhatsApp Photos & Videos From Your Phone's Default Gallery «Android :: Gadget Hacks

When you receive a photo or video from a contact in WhatsApp, it will automatically be saved to your phone's local store after loading. This means that all content received from WhatsApp is visible to anyone who has access to your default photo gallery. Luckily, there's a new feature for the Android version of the app that can prevent that.

For now, this new feature is an experiment in the WhatsApp Beta for Android, but you can try it now by joining The WhatsApp Beta from Google Play.

Android's new WhatsApp beta feature prevents photos and videos from being automatically saved to your device's default gallery. Any media you already have in your WhatsApp Gallery will be retained. Only new media received will be blocked in your Gallery app. All media can still be viewed in the WhatsApp threads in which they were received.

Option 1: Hide all new photos and videos in WhatsApp

If you want WhatsApp to hide photos and videos from the If you set Gallery as the default option for all chats, tap the overflow icon (three vertical dots) in the top right corner of the WhatsApp main screen, then tap Settings, select Chats, then finish sure to see "Show Media Gallery" under Me Viewability is disabled to make sure this option becomes the default for all your chats.

Option 2: Override the default app-wide setting per chat [19659009] If you only want to hide one or more of your chat media from your gallery, you do not have to rely on an app-wide setting to get the job done , You can change the settings for each chat to best fit your needs.

First, enter one of your chat topics, then tap the name of the contact or chat at the top. Next, under Media tap on "Media Visibility." You'll be greeted with three options:

  • Default: This will apply to all chat threads if you do not change them. By default, all threads use the settings you've set for the entire app. For example, if you did not use the above step, "Yes" should be displayed. However, if you hide the app, "No" appears.
  • Yes: This overrides the app. wide setting to save all photos and videos in the device's default gallery app just for this conversation thread
  • No: This setting overrides the app-wide setting to all photos and videos from the default gallery app Hide conversation thread

Choose the option that best suits your situation. However, if you set a chat to "Default," the setting changes each time you change the default option in Step 1.

For both options, remember that you do not receive photos and videos in WhatsApp. If you hide media either app-wide or app-based, photos and videos will still appear in the WhatsApp chats (unless you delete the media or entire chats).

And of course you can do the opposite These settings can be changed at any time. You need to know that individual chats must be changed individually unless they are set to "Default".
