Once you've got iOS 1
The next time you need a rough reading of your coffee table instead of going through the drawers for ten minutes and looking for your tape measure, take your phone instead.
Note that iOS 12 is currently available in beta. As such, Apple can and often changes and changes functions. If this happens with the Measure app, we will update this post to reflect changes.
Each time you open the app, you are prompted to move the phone so it can analyze the area you want to measure. Hold your phone so that the camera points to the object you want to measure, and move the phone around until you see a white circle with a dot in the middle.
Align the white dot with a corner on the object you want to measure and press the white button with the + sign in the center. When the app detects an object, the point is often "caught" at a corner as you approach it.
After pressing the measurement button, slowly move to the point where the measurement should end. Once there, press the measurement button again. If you mess up, there is an undo button at the top of the screen and a delete button.
Measure a page again by repositioning the white dot and pressing the measure button. You can repeat this process as often as you like.
Tap the shutter button at the bottom right to take a picture of the measurement.
I still have not found the right conditions for the app to automatically detect four corners of an object and make it yellow (see above), but if it does, it's pretty cool.
When this happens, simply tap the Measure button to calculate the length of each segment and display the square in the center.
If the app does not automatically detect the full extent of an object, you can still use it for placeholder estimates. Just measure each side of the object, and then let the app do its magic.
Adjusting a Measurement
If you measure something and you do not have the start or end point in the right place, do not start over. Use your finger instead to drag the dot to the right place.
Reservations and References
Before I forget it, there's also a level in the new Measure app. It's the same level that has been in the Compass app for the past few years.
Switch to the layer by selecting the Layer tab at the bottom of the screen and then placing the phone on the surface you want to align. Once the two circles are aligned and 0 is read in the middle, the interface changes from black and white to green.
