How to activate it

Facebook Messenger for Android has received an experimental dark mode feature after it was first pointed out last May (via Android Police ). The feature is being introduced after several other recent dark-fashion app developments, while Google is preparing for native Dark-mode support in Android Q.

Although the functionality is intended to be available to all users, it is a work-in-progress method and brings with it some unconventional activation method.

How to Enable Dark Mode in Facebook Messenger:

  1. First, send someone a Yellow Halfmoon Emoji (yes, Important Note: Not some ancient emoji of the moon would work, the specific faceless crescent seen in the pictures above is the right one (I think the dark moon might have been more appropriate, but I'll get over it).
  2. This will cause a shiver on the moon screen followed by a pop-up window saying the feature can now be activated.
  3. You're not quite done yet go to the app settings and find a dark mode toggle. Tap to turn it on.
  4. That's it! Remember that the a Once the feature is activated, it will remain in the app settings forever, so you can easily turn it on and off.

In most menus, dark mode is available, making you look a bit less at night. The functionality does not seem to be available in Facebook Lite yet, but we'll let you know if we find it there too.
