As expected, Android 11 offers many new features, including a fancy new embedded media player. Instead of a constant notification, your audio controls will now move to the Quick Settings panel when you play music. To make room for this new media player functionality, the total number of tiles had to be reduced from nine to six for quick settings.
This new change for Android 11 may not be welcomed by some, as six tiles in a three-by-two area might seem too few. Fortunately, developer Tulsadiver put together a small Magisk module to solve exactly this problem. Even better, there’s no extra fluff – the only purpose is to recreate the 9-tile layout in your quick settings panel, just like Android 1
- Root access
- Pixel device with Android 11 (Mod not tested on other models)
- Magic installed
Step 1: Download the 9 Tiles QS module
To get started, you’ll need to download the Magisk module. So tap on the link below from your Android 11 Pixel device. Depending on your browser, you may need to long press and select “Save file”.
It should be mentioned that Tulsadiver got permission to use the base for this 9 Tiles QS module from j to 4n, the developer of the Edge Sense Plus mod.
Step 2: Install the module
Since this is a third party module and is not listed in the official Magisk repo, you will have to install it manually. Open Magisk Manager, tap the “Modules” icon at the bottom, then click the “Install from Storage” button. It should show your recent downloads. If not, navigate to the location where the file is saved (the Download folder by default).
Note: If you’re using the old version of Magisk Manager, go to “Modules” from the Hamburger menu instead.
Tap once on the “9tiles.zip” file and the installation will begin. It can take about a minute to process. So give him some time. When you’re done, click the Restart button below to restart your device and activate the module.
Step 3: Enjoy your 9-tile quick settings panel
Now it’s time to check that the module is working on your device. Swipe down to access your Quick Settings panel as normal and see, you should now see a 3 x 3 grid of 9 icons. If not, click the edit pencil icon and drag and drop additional tiles onto your quick setting panel. You will now need at least nine tiles if you make changes here.
Even with the embedded media controls when playing music, the 9 tiles should stay in place for most, if not all, of the time. I’ve seen it occasionally pushing the lower pillar up and going temporarily to the 6 platelets. However, the latest version of this mode no longer does this during my tests and now stays active all the time.
If you ever want to go back to the default number of tiles for quick settings, it’s no problem to do so. Open Magisk Manager, return to the Modules section and click Remove under Tulsadiver Raised Tiles on 9. Click the Restart button above to remove the module and restart the device. After the restart, the default settings will be restored as usual.
